Wireless Application
Development
Introduction:
• Buying and selling products and services through mobile devices are the new trend.
• A housewife can purchase her kitchen appliances from the comfort of her living
room, a busy person can order lunch from office, one can use mobile platforms to
sell goods and services − all with a few clicks.
What is M-Commerce?
• Mobile commerce or simply M-Commerce means engaging users in a buy or sell
process via a mobile device.
• For instance, when someone buys an Android app or an iPhone app, that person is
engaged in m-commerce.
• There are a number of content assets that can be bought and sold via a mobile
device such as games, applications, ringtones, subscriptions etc.
M-commerce (mobile commerce) :
“Buying and selling of goods and services through wireless handheld devices such as
smartphones and tablets.”
Information services, which include the delivery of financial news, sports figures and traffic updates to a
single mobile device.
Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce)
• Very simply put M-commerce entails the e-commerce transactions done with a mobile phone.
• M-commerce is the use of mobile phones to conduct any type of business transaction.
• It takes the help of the e-commerce background and WAP technology.

Use of wireless technology (WAP):

• To conduct sales of goods.
• Provide services.
• Make payments and other financial transactions, the exchange of information etc. is the basis
of mobile commerce.
[WAP-
Wireless Application Protocol]
• De facto worldwide standard for providing Internet communications and
advanced telephony services on digital mobile phones, pagers, personal
digital assistants, and other wireless terminals − WAP Forum.
• WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol.
Dictionary definition of these terms are as follows −
• Wireless − Lacking or not requiring a wire or wires pertaining to radio
transmission.
• Application − A computer program or piece of computer software that is
designed to do a specific task.
• Protocol − A set of technical rules about how information should be
transmitted and received using computers.
WAP :

-Standardized technology for cross-platform.

-Distributed computing very similar to the Internet's combination of
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) + Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(HTTP), except that it is optimized for:
• low-display capability
• low-memory
• low-bandwidth devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs),
wireless phones, and pagers.
• WAP is designed to scale across a broad range of wireless networks like
GSM, IS-95, IS-136, and PDC.
Who is behind WAP?

-Result of joint efforts taken by companies teaming up in an industry group called WAP
Forum (www.wapforum.org).
• On June 26, 1997, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Unwired Planet took the initiative to
start a rapid creation of a standard for making advanced services within the wireless
domain a reality.
• In December 1997, WAP Forum was formally created and after the release of the WAP
1.0 specifications in April 1998, WAP Forum membership was opened to all.
• WAP Forum now has over 500 members and represents over 95 percent of the global
handset market.
• Companies such as Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson are all members of the forum.
• Objective of the forum
To create a license-free standard that brings information and telephony services to
wireless devices.
WAP MODEL:

The WAP gateway translates this WAP request into

a conventional HTTP URL request and sends it over
the internet. The request reaches to a specified
web server and it processes the request just as it
would have processed any other request and sends
the response back to the mobile device through

Mobile Users − Statistics :
• As per the survey carried out by Google in partnership with Ipsos OTX MediaCT on
5000+ users, 89% use smartphones throughout the day.
• Out of this −
• 89% stay connected
• 82% research and read news
• 75% navigate
• 65% entertain
• 45% manage and plan
• 70% uses mobile devices to make purchase
• 82% notice ads on mobile devices of which around 42% go ahead and click on ads
• Advertisers should use location-based services to be easily accessible.
• Owning a responsive website is a must now.

Mobile Marketing Technology & Reach
mobile devices :In such a scenario, every business person willing to practice the mobile marketing technique has to be aware about the following top 5 ways in which mobile technologies have changed the way users interact.
Open wave Phone Simulator
• Simulators let you run programs that were not made for your
computer’s OS. Simulators for mobile app testing are commonly
used by testers to run their code, especially in the early stages. In the
context of this post, ‘simulator’ refers to the iPhone and iPad
simulator in XCode. You can also think of them as mobile simulators
(especially for iPhones).
• Note: There are no ‘Android simulators’, largely because it’s simpler
to emulate Android devices with freely available tools like Quick
Emulator (QEMU).
• How iOS Simulators Work: The iOS simulator sits on top of your operating
system. From there, it mimics iOS and runs your app inside it. This process is
viewable in an iPhone or iPad-like window.
• You can interact with this device window via keyboard or touchpad/mouse.
• Capabilities: The iOS simulator is significantly faster than Android emulator,
purely because there’s no machine-language translation involved.
• Limitations: The simulator cannot mimic battery states or cellular
interrupts, unlike the Android emulator.
• You also cannot use the iOS simulator on platforms other than macOS. This
is because the simulator needs Apple’s native Cocoa API–a massive library of
frameworks–to handle GUI, runtime, and more.

M-commerce trust ,
security and payment
• 1. Encryption - Encryption safeguards private information by utilizing a secret key, ensuring data security
on mobile devices. It serves as a critical defense against mobile payment security threats, rendering data
inaccessible without the appropriate decryption key.
• 2.Authentication -At the checkout, shoppers are asked to enter an OTP or authentication message
delivered to their registered cell phone or email. This validates legitimate card ownership and gives the
transaction the green light.
• 3.Confidentiality-At the core of mobile payment security lies encryption, a technology that transforms
sensitive data into an unreadable format, making it indecipherable to unauthorized parties. End-to-end
encryption ensures that the payment information remains confidential throughout the entire transaction
process.
• 4. Integrity- integrity in mobile payments is the assurance that payment information is not modified by
malicious attackers or external factors. Mobile payments are different from cash or checks because they exchange
digital currency, so users can't immediately be alerted if there's a problem. Without integrity, users can be
continuously exposed to damage
• 5.Non-repudiation- Nonrepudiation is achieved through cryptography, like digital signatures, and
includes other services for authentication, auditing and logging. In online transactions, digital
signatures ensure that a party cannot later deny sending information or deny the authenticity of its
signature.
MOBILE PAYMENT :
• The mobile commerce boom amongst global consumers has resulted in several types of
mobile payment options. Some of the most common types of mobile payment solutions

 Challenges Faced at Mobile Payments
• 1. Interoperability:
• Interoperability between different mobile payment systems remains a hurdle as they operate as siloed platforms
with their wallet interfaces, UX, and merchant networks. This lack of connectivity means funds cannot be
seamlessly transferred or used across different apps, reducing convenience.
• Addressing interoperability requires cooperation between stakeholders on common standards and open APIs.
• 2. Network Issues:
• Network connectivity issues also impact the mobile payment experience. Glitches in data speeds or signals can
cause transaction failures or delays at busy checkouts. Investments are being made to strengthen infrastructure,
but 100% uptime remains challenging.
• 3. Security Threats:
• Security continues to be a top concern area. While tokenisation and encryption protocols secure transactions, the
growing sophistication of cybercriminals through malware, phishing scams, and SIM swaps poses ongoing risks.
Maintaining vigilance against new and evolving attack vectors demands significant resources.
• 4. Customer Education:
• Educating all demographics, especially in rural regions, on safely using digital payment apps also takes focused
efforts. Simple tutorials, demos, and support hotlines can help boost user confidence and address adoption
barriers.
• 5. Merchant Acceptance:
• Onboarding small neighborhood shops and merchants spread across the country at scale requires streamlined
onboarding flows with assisted onboarding programs. Their technical capabilities and digital literacy also impact
acceptance levels.
