 It is symmetric about the mean
 It is continuous
 Normal curve is asymptotic
 Total area under the normal
distribution is 1.00 or 100% of
the dataset.

Find the area under the standard normal
distribution curve at the left of Z = 1.15
 P(-1.15 < Z)

 0.8749
Find the area under the standard normal distribution
curve at the right of Z = 1.15 and left of Z = -1.85
 P(Z < -1.85) + P(1.15 < Z)
 Area is 0.1573 or 15.73%
 0.0322 + (1.000 – 0.8749)
Find the z-value such that area under the standard
normal distribution curve between 0 and positive z-
value is 0.3962
 The answer is 1.26
 Area from the left to positive Z-value is 0.8962
 0.8962 = 0.500 + 0.3962
Formula for computing Z-value

 Z = z-value
 X = value of any particular observation or measurement
 = mean of the distribution
 = standard deviation
Application of normal distribution
1. The average SSS salary loan for UE employees is P23,000. If the
debt is normally distributed with a standard deviation of P2,500. Find
the probability that the UE employee owes less than P18,500.
Application of normal distribution
1. The average SSS salary loan for UE employees is P23,000. If the
debt is normally distributed with a standard deviation of P2,500. Find
the probability that the UE employee owes less than P18,500.
Solution:

Z = -1.80
Probability area = 0.0359 or 3.59%
Application of normal distribution
2. The average age of bank managers is 40 years old. Assume the
variable is normally distributed. If the standard deviation is 5 years,
find the probability that a randomly selected bank manager is in the
range of 35 to 46 years old.
Application of normal distribution
2. The average age of bank managers is 40 years old. Assume the
variable is normally distributed. If the standard deviation is 5 years, find
the probability that a randomly selected bank manager is in the range of
35 to 46 years old.
Solution:

Area between Z = -1 and Z = 1.20

0.8849 – 0.1587
Probability area = 0.7262 or 72.62%
Application of normal distribution
3. To qualify for IT instructor, applicants must score in the top 20% on a
mental ability test. The test has a score mean of 180 points and a
standard deviation of 25. Find the lowest possible score to qualify.

3. To qualify for IT instructor, applicants must score in the top 20% on a
mental ability test. The test has a score mean of 180 points and a
standard deviation of 25. Find the lowest possible score to qualify.
Solution:
Area from left to z-value is 80% = 100% - 20%
Z-value = 0.84

X = 201
