Topic: Heat &
Temperature Change
Mr. Dunnan
Definition of Terms
Heat-is energy in transfer between a thermodynamic
system and its surroundings by modes other than
thermodynamic work and transfer of matter.
Specific Heat Capacity (c )- This is the heat needed to
change 1 kg of a substance by one degree Kelvin.
Heat Capacity ( C)- The heat required to change a
body of mass by 1 degree kelvin.
Remembering Conversions
Kelvin = 273 + oC
Example
27oC + 273 = 300K
Formula & Calculations
Energy = Mass X Specific Heat Capacity X Change in
temperature
E= Mc X change in T
Temperature change = Final Temperature – Initial
Temperature
C (heat capacity) = mass x c (specific heat capacity)
Formula & Calculations
E=m x c x T
c=E/mxT
c unit is J kg-1 K-1
Specific Heat Capacity of some
Substances
SUBSTANCE SHC/ J kg-1 K -1
Ethanol 2400
Water 4200
Ice 2100
Wood 1700
Lead 130
Copper 390
Sample Problems
Determine the heat required to change the
temperature of a block, of mass 4.0kg and SHC 400 J
Kg-1 K -1 from 20C to 60C.
E=mXcXT
E= 4.0kg x 400 x (60- 20 ) = 64,000J
Sample Problems
A copper block of mass 2.0kg cools from 120C to XC
as it is immersed in water of mass of 3kg, initially at
25C. Determine the final temperature XC.
SHC of water = 4200J Kg-1 K -1
SHC of copper = 390J Kg -1 K-1
A copper block of mass 2.0kg cools from 120C to XC as it is immersed in
water of mass of 3kg, initially at 25C. Determine the final temperature XC.
SHC of water = 4200J Kg-1 K -1
SHC of copper = 390J Kg -1 K-1
Heat gain by water = Heat loss by copper
Mw X Cw X Tw = Mc X Cc X Tc
3 x 4200 x (X- 25) = 2 X 390 X (120- X)
12600 x ( X -25) = 780 x ( 120- X)
12600X – 315000= 93600- 780X
12600X + 780X = 93,600 +31500
13,380X= 408,600
X= 408600/ 13,380
X= 30.5oC
