What Are Computer
Generations?
•Computer generations refer to the phases of
development in computer technology.
•Each generation is marked by significant advancements
in hardware, software, and functionality.
•Five generations have been identified so far.
First Generation (1940s-
1950s)
•Time Period: 1940s to 1950s
•Technology Used: Vacuum tubes
•Characteristics:
• Large in size (room-sized
computers)
• High power consumption
• Limited processing power
•Examples: ENIAC, UNIVAC
Second Generation
(1950s-1960s)
•Time Period: 1950s to 1960s
•Technology Used: Transistors
(replaced vacuum tubes)
•Characteristics:
• Smaller, faster, and more energy-
efficient
• Use of assembly language and
high-level programming languages
(e.g., COBOL, FORTRAN)
•Examples: IBM 1401, IBM 7094
Third Generation (1960s-
1970s)
•Time Period: 1960s to 1970s
•Technology Used: Integrated Circuits
(ICs)
•Characteristics:
• Smaller, faster, and more reliable
• Introduction of operating systems
• Improved user interaction (keyboard
and monitor)
•Examples: IBM System/360, PDP-8
Fourth Generation (1970s-
Present)
•Time Period: 1970s to Present
•Technology Used: Microprocessors
(thousands of ICs on a single chip)
•Characteristics:
• Personal computers (PCs) became
widely available
• Development of GUIs (Graphical User
Interfaces)
• Networking and internet capabilities
•Examples: Apple Macintosh, IBM PC
Fifth Generation (Present and
Beyond)
•Time Period: Present and Beyond
•Technology Used: Artificial Intelligence,
Quantum Computing, and Parallel
Processing
•Characteristics:
• Focus on AI and machine learning
• Natural language processing (e.g.,
voice assistants)
• Quantum computing (still in
development)
•Examples: IBM Watson, Google
Future of Computing

•Quantum computing
•Advanced AI and machine learning
•Biocomputing and neural networks
•Continued miniaturization and integration into
daily life
Conclusion

•Computer generations highlight the rapid

evolution of technology.
•Each generation has brought significant
advancements, shaping the modern world.
•The future holds even more exciting possibilities.
