 A general purpose application,
sometimes known as ‘off-the-
shelf’ is the sort of software
that you use at home and
school.

 Examples include word


processors, spreadsheets,
databases, desktop publishing
packages,
graphics packages etc.

There are several good reasons for using general purpose
software:

 It is relatively cheap
 It is easily available from most computer shops
 It will have been thoroughly tested so there won’t be
any serious problems or bugs
 There will be lots of user support i.e. books, user
guides, online help and discussion forums on the
Internet

Integrated Software

Integrated software is a collection of software especially created to work


on closely related programs. These are used in personal computers where
the most commonly used and most similar programs are grouped together
in one application in the form of a suite. One of the most well-known
examples of an integrated software suite is Microsoft Office, which
comprises programs used in an office environment.

Specialized Software

Specialized Software; are packages are software written for a


specific discipline, such as Inventory Management, Asset
Management, Calendar/To Do List etc. They are mainly designed
for experts within a field such as; Banking, Medicine, Government
etc.

Software

Custom software, also known as bespoke software, is software


that is built from scratch to match the client's requirements.
Defined in a relatively simple way, it is a software product put
together all the way from its foundation to its ends to fit the needs
of the user looking to purchase it.

Customization of General Purpose software is the process of


tailoring General purpose software and integrating it directly with
other applications that the organization has in use. This also gives
the user the ability to customize the interface of the applications,
and also automate the application to speed up processing.
