Copy of Explain-Sound Fill-in Notes

The document explains the concepts of waves and sound, detailing the types of waves, their properties, and how sound is produced and transmitted. It covers key terms such as frequency, amplitude, and pitch, and includes illustrations and check-for-understanding sections. Additionally, it discusses the Doppler Effect and the role of sound waves in human hearing and medical imaging.

WAVES & SOUND

EXPLAIN: Sound
● I can describe the role of waves in transferring energy. (a)
● I can model of a longitudinal (compression) wave and label its parts (eg.
wavelength, amplitude, frequency, crest, and trough).
● I can identify the property of sound waves that corresponds to loudness. (6b)
● I can construct and use models and simulations to represent waves including
how the amplitude of a wave is related to its energy. (a)
● I can explain the relationship between frequency and wavelength. (a)
What is a WAVE?
Seismic waves
● A ___vibration_____ that transfers energy from one place to
another. ocean waves

Ropes and
● There are __2__ types of waves: sound waves springs
1) Mechanical waves
2) Electromagnetic waves

● Sounds waves are a type of ____mechanical_________ wave.

○ Sound = caused when something vibrates, making
particles vibrate back and forth in the direction of the wave.
Mechanical Waves - Sound
● Mechanical waves require a Medium(matter) to travel through

● The medium could be solid, liquid, or gas.

● They move as -
○ Longitudinal (compressional) waves
OR
○ Transverse waves
Parts of a Wave
● Crest- the top of transverse wave

● Trough- the bottom of a transverse wave Crest

Wavelength

amplitude
● Wavelength - distance between one point to similar
point (crest to crest, trough to trough, compression toResting
compression) position

amplitude
Wavelength
● Amplitude - height of a transverse wave (measured
from resting position to crest OR trough
○ The HIGHER the amplitude, the MORE energy a
Trough
wave has
Check for Understanding: Label the transverse wave

AMPLITUDE

TROUGH
What is FREQUENCY?
● Frequency- the number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point
each second

● As frequency increases, the wavelength decreases.

LOW frequency = LONGER wavelength HIGH frequency = SHORTER wavelength

LOW energy HIGH energy

Check for Understanding: Wavelengths
Place the pictures in order from LEAST energy to MOST energy AND explain why.

LEAST ENERGY WHY? Because it has the

longest wavelength

WHY? It has medium

frequency

MOST ENERGY
WHY? Has the shortest
wave length
SOUND WAVES
● sound= caused when something vibrates,
making particles vibrate back and forth in the
direction of the wave.

● Sound can’t travel through empty space

vibrate, therefore
(substance like solid, liquid or gas), to be transmitted. forming a sound wave

PLAY TIME! Observe the amplitude of loud and soft sounds you

LOUDNESS
● Sounds that are louder have a larger
amplitude (higher energy)

● Sounds that are softer have a smaller

amplitude (lower energy)

PITCH HIGH pitch

● How “high” or “low a note is

● High pitch = high frequency = high energy

● Low pitch = low frequency = low energy

Seeing with Sound
● Ultrasonic waves - above 20,000 Hz

Medical Imaging SONAR

“Sound Navigation Ranging”
Resonance vibrate at maximum amplitude (maximum
energy) at certain frequencies
Check for Understanding: Which wave....?

Which wave has.... Answer WHY?

the greatest wavelength? z Far wavelength

the highest energy? y Highest amplitude

the lowest frequency? z Lowest amplitude

the highest pitch? y Highest amplitude

Doppler Effect
● The doppler effect is the change of frequency and pitch of
sound as a result of motion.
