16 Graphics

The document explains two types of graphics: bitmap images and vector graphics. Bitmap images are pixel-based, resolution dependent, and can become pixelated when enlarged, while vector graphics are created using mathematical commands, are resolution independent, and result in smaller file sizes. It also provides an overview of Adobe Photoshop's interface and how to create new files within the software.

Graphics software can produce two types images.

 Bitmap images
 Vector graphics
Bitmap images
Bitmap images (raster images) are made up of
pixels in a grid. Pixels are picture elements: tiny
squares of individual color that make up what
you see on your screen.
Bitmap images (Contd.)

 Bitmap images are resolution

dependent.
 High resolution images require more
storage.
 If a bitmap image get enlarged,
individual pixels become visible. This is
referred as pixilation.
Pixilation
Types of Bitmap Formats

 GIF
 JPEG, JPG
 PNG
 TIFF
 PSD (Adobe Photoshop)
Vector Graphics
Vector graphics is the creation of digital
images through a sequence of commands or
mathematical statements that place lines and
shapes in a given two-dimensional or three-
dimensional space.
 Co-ordinates: Set of numbers(x,y) that gives
the exact position of a point on an image.
 Stylised: Drawn, written or performed in an
artistic style that does not appear real or
natural.
Vector Graphics (Contd.)
Vector Graphics (Contd.)

 Create much smaller files compared to

raster graphics
 Vector graphics are resolution
independent
 Used to create architectural drawings,
CAD programmes, Flow charts, Cartoons
,clip arts, …etc
Vector Graphics Vs. Bitmap Graphics
Creating images using Adobe Photoshop

 Starting Photoshop

Start→ All programs→ Adobe Photoshop CS6

 Customize the appearance of the Photoshop

window

Edit→ Preferences → Interface

Components of the Photoshop window

 Tools box: Offers various tools that lets you select,

edit draw, paint and view image
 Menu bar: Provides menu commands to performing
various tasks in Photoshop
 Tool options bar: Provides options related to the
tool currently selected in the tools box

 Image window: Area that displays the image file
that you will work on
Creating a new file
 File→ New

 name - allows you to give a name to your file

 size - you can select a size from pre-set sizes or you
can specify your own size

memory to store and low resolution images will need
less memory to store
 mode - there are several colour modes like Bitmap,
Grayscale, RGB, CMYK and Lab)
