Types of peripheral

Devices

Edexcel GCSE (9-1)

Peripheral Devices are devices that
can be connected to a computer.

Can be grouped into three:

 Input
 Output
 Storage
Activity
Input Devices

Devices which we used to send data

and instructions to the computer.
Key Board
 Used to input text & to interact with software
 Wired and wireless keyboards are available
Different key boards for different
OS, languages and functions…
Touch type
Method used to type without looking at the key board
What is a keyboard
shortcut?
A combination of key presses used to access common
software commands quickly.

Eg:-
Ctrl + S
Ctrl + C
Ctrl + N
Task:- Find some more key board shortcuts used in
MS Word.
Pointing Devices
 Used on a screen to select objects that are visible
Pointing Devices

Mouse
 Uses an optical sensor to recognize the movement of
the device
 There are various types of mouse
Pointing Devices

Tracker Ball
 The ball is on the top of the device and you
move it with your thumb.
 It does not contain buttons to press
like mouse
Pointing Devices

Track Pad
 It senses the fingure movements, touches and
presses
Pointing Devices

Joystick
 Commonly used in gaming to control the
graphics
 Sprites: On – screen graphics in a computer
game such as characters, objects, vehicles…
etc.
Pointing Devices

Graphic Tablet
 It is a flat pad that is used with a stylus.
Stylus- Pen shaped device
Scanners
 Scanners use light sensors to record physical
documents as images, and saved as files to
the computer
Optical Character Reader
 (OCR)
OCR is the
identification of
printed or written
text characters by a
computer.
 Stored as text that
can be word-
processed.
 Used to read
handwriting.
Optical Mark Reader (OMR)

 Used to interpret pencil marks on a piece of paper.

 Marks made on this kind of form must be very clear or
they may not be properly recognized.
Barcode scanner
 Barcode is a pattern of lines and gaps that can be
read by barcode scanners
 There are two types of barcodes:
o Linear
o Matrix(QR code)
 Matrix Codes can store more data than linear
 Matrix Codes can be scanned from any angle
 Smart phones/tablets devices use device’s camera
to capture the QR code
 There are apps available to scan these QR codes.
Webcam
 A webcam is a type of digital video camera where the
image captured is viewed using a computer.
 Low quality than camcorders because some of the
web cams may have in-built microphones to capture
sound
 Used as security cameras
Activity
Microphone
• Used to capture sound
• Often used by people with disabilities
in order to use devices and technology
The movement Sound card
Air hits the produces an converts the
diaphragm analogue analogue to
electrical signal digital
Built in microphones

 Small in size
 Low quality
 Use for
 Voice recognition
 Recording
 Allowing VoIP
High quality microphones

 Used by recording artists

 Can be connected to a sound card’s audio input port
VoIP

 Voice Over Internet Protocol

 It allows user to use internet
connection to communicate with
other people
Touch Screen
There are two types
Resistive
Capacitive
Resistive

 More durable
 Harder to read because more
layers reflect more light
 Can recognize one touch at a
time
 Not suitable for multi-touch
applications
Capacitive

 Under the glass screen there is a layer of

capacitive material.
 When a user touches, a small amount of
charge flows away since the humans are
conductive.
 Often used in smart phones
Biometric Scanner

Scanner Types :
 Fingerprint recognition
 Facial recognition
 Voice recognition
 Iris recognition
Fingerprint recognition

 Read the patterns of,

 Arches
 Loops
 Whorls
 Fingerprints are unique to each individual person
 Useful method of identification
 But can be obscured, damaged of changed such as
injury or disease
Facial recognition

 Identify the structure of the human face

Voice recognition
 Require a microphone to capture the
sound
 Compare the captured sound with the
recorded sound to match
Iris recognition

 Iris has a pattern that is unique

 More reliable than the fingerprint(120
times more detailed than the fingerprint)
Other biometric
verifications
 Retina scanners
 DNA scanners
 Veins scanners
Advantages of biometric
scanners
 Easier for users – cannot be forgotten
 Can speed up the transactions
 Not restricted by language barriers
 More difficult to trick or confuse
Disadvantages of biometric
scanners
 Cause privacy and security concerns
because the personal information is
stored electronically
 Make some people feel uncomfortable
 Expensive to set up
 Possible to trick and confuse them
Card Readers
 Read data stored in
cards
 The data can be used to
unlock doors, access
secure areas, make
payments or track
people, parcels and
even pet animals
Card Types:
 Magnetic strips
 Programmable chips
 RFID and NFC
Magnetic strips

 Least secure methods

 Cards can be stolen and used without
owners knowledge
Programmable chips

Only readable when a correct PIN is

entered into the reader

Eg. ATM cards

RFID and NFC

 Short range wireless communication

 Cheap, small tags to be inserted to
different types of products, animals
 Contains a unique ID number that is
linked to the database
Sensors

 Inputs data on physical environment

 Can automatically input data
 Input is processed by computers and
output is obtained
 One of the main features in smart
devices
Examples

 Temperature sensors
 Pressure sensors
 Light sensors
 Sound sensors
 Humidity/ Moisture sensors
Research the benefits of
using sensors.
