LESSON 1: PUBLIC
SPEAKING
WHAT IS PUBLIC
SPEAKING?
PUBLIC SPEAKING
- It is an act or process of communicating orally.
- A presentation that’s given live before an audience. Public
speeches can cover a wide variety of different topics.
- The goal of the speech may be to educate, inform,
entertain, or influence the listeners . Often, visual aids in
the form of an electronic slideshow are used to
supplement the speech and make it more interesting to
the listeners.
PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public Speaking can be done through:


Class project or school activity
Clubs or organization events
Internship or job interviews
Family gatherings
IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
◦It gives you self-confidence.
◦It’s an important skill in the workplace.
◦It helps you present yourself as a thought leader.
◦It forces you to learn.
◦It gives you an advantage.
◦It can persuade other people to see thing s your way.

TYPES OF PUBLIC SPEECH

There are 3 Important type of


Public Speaking:

◦Entertaining
INFORMATIVE
-When a person gives a speech before
an audience to impart information on
a particular topic or issue, it said to
be an informative speech.
-Presents facts, details and examples
INFORMATIVE
GOAL:

-Clarify

INFORMATIVE
Example:
1. Business Presentations
2. A teacher telling students about
earthquakes
3. A computer programmer speaking
about new software
PERSUASIVE
-Are those where one tries to persuade
or convince a group of people. These
speeches aims to influence and change
the opinions of the audience.
-Stir audiences emotions, give reasons or
make sense of what’s right and wrong.
PERSUASIVE

PERSUASIVE
Example:
1. Persuasive speeches are most commonly
used by sales and marketing people to
promote a product or service.
2. Become an organ donor
3. Improve your health through better
eating.
ENTERTAINING
-Are those where one tries to
commemorate or humor the
listeners.
-The speaker make them happy
through jokes and short stories.
ENTERTAINING

GOAL:
-Catch the audience’s attention.
-Hold their interest
-Use humor
-Exude charisma
ENTERTAINING

Example:
1. Stand up Comedy Show
ELEMENTS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
1. Speaker- delivers the speech
2. Message- the idea the speaker desires to share.
3. Audience- receiver of the message.
4. Channel- ways a speaker communicates.
◦Auditory channel- includes the tone and the volume of the
speaker’s voice.
◦Visual channel- includes any materials that appeal to the sense of
sight.
◦Non-verbal channel- includes facial expression, body movements,
gestures, and the speaker’s stance or posture.
ELEMENTS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
5. Place- where the speech is delivered.
6. Noise- challenges a speaker may
face during the delivery.
7. Feedback- the response of the
members of the audience.

LEARNING ACTIVITY
1. Research internet examples for the 3 types of speeches
discussed in this lesson. Have at least 1 example for each.
2. Make your own example of Informative Speech or Persuasive
Speech. You can now start planning your speech with the topic
grounded in modern day politics and current events.
3. Speech should last from 3-5 minutes.
4. Prepare to deliver your speech next week and this will serve
as your pre-mid exam.
5. Your speech will be evaluated using a rubric. Perfect score is
100%, passing score is 75%.
NOTE:
1. Make sure that all the preparations made in this lesson are
incorporated in the speech, such as an introduction, evidence,
conclusion and adequate evidence to prove your point.
2. For each paragraph, place the key words or phrases in one
Index card that should help you remember what you wrote.
3. . Remember the lessons from Chapter 1 and adjust your speech
according to the following:
• The audience and their field of experience
• The kind of language to use according to your audience
• The message and the feedback coming from the audience
NOTE:
4. Be conscious of your voice. Ensure that it is loud enough to reach the
whole room.
5. Be conscious of your posture. Do not slouch or look at the floor
6. Be conscious of your hand gestures. Strive for a happy balance of
meaningful hand gestures and poise.
6. Be conscious of your body language. Avoid crossing your arms too
much or inching toward the back of the room. Try to be more open with
your gestures.
7. Be conscious of your eye contact. Try to make eye contact with at least
three people you feel comfortable with in different parts of the room.
