Chapter Four

Chapter Four of the document discusses cast iron, which is a ferrous alloy with carbon content above 2.14 wt.%, and highlights its melting temperature range. It outlines the common types of cast iron, including gray, nodular, white, and malleable cast iron, along with their applications. The chapter concludes with a mention of the effects of alloying elements on cast iron.

Chapter Four
4.1. Introduction to Cast Iron

Ferrous alloys with carbon contents above 2.14 wt.%

Liquid in the temperature range 1150˚C and 1300 ˚C, considerably lower than for
steel.

They are easily melted and amenable to casting.

Since they are very brittle, casting is the most convenient fabrication technique.

4.2. Type and Application of Cast Iron

The most common types of cast iron are:-

Gray cast iron

Nodular cast iron

White cast iron

Malleable cast iron
