Origins of Entrepreneurship

•The roots of entrepreneurship can be


traced to capitalism which pertains to an
economic, political and social system
which has its roots in the desire of private
citizens, produce goods and services that
the public need.
•The term entrepreneur is often traced to
the French words ENTREPRENDRE, or
one who undertakes
•a manager.
•Some researchers believe that it could also be
derived from other French words celui qui
entreprend which means those who get things
done.
• Hisrich, Peter and Shephered authors of
entrepreneurship consider Marco Polo as an early
entrepreneur, who search for new travel routes.
The beginning of
Entrepreneurship trade

• can be traced back to nearly 20,000 years ago.


• The first known trading between humans took
place in New Guinea around 17,000 BCE,
where locals would exchange obsidian ( a
volcanic glass prized for its used in hunting tools,
skins, and food).
These were the earliest entrepreneurs in human civilization. Some
common areas of specialization included:

 Hunting and Gathering


 Fishing
 Cooking
Tool making
 Shelter building
 clothes making
The 2004 – 2010 SME development plan
identities the following specific programs to
promote entrepreneurship.

WHO IS AN
ENTREPRENEUR?
THE ENTREPRENEUR
• The founder and creator of the enterprise who
makes use of the opportunities that bound to start or
grow a business, knowing that there are risks involved
in such undertaking.
THE ENTREPRENEUR
• For an economist’s point of view, it is someone who
brings resources, labor, materials and other assets
into combinations that make their value greater that
before; also one who introduces changes, innovations
and new order.
• To a psychologist’s point of view, a person who is
typically driven by certain forces such as the need to
obtain or attain something, to experiment, to
accomplish, or perhaps to escape the authority of
others.
• From management perspective – Someone who identifies
opportunities, plans, mobilizes resources, manages, and
assumes the risks of a business to have a positive impact on
society.

• involve the desire to attain, accomplish or obtain a goal, or
something that has one aimed for:
1.Opportunity Seeking- being alert to opportunities that come the
entrepreneur's way.

2.Persistence- ability of an entrepreneur to remain steadfast, focused and


solution-oriented in spite of what could become roadblocks makes their business
more likely to succeed.
3.the act of binding yourself intellectually and
emotionally to a course of action.
4. Risk Taking- about dealing with uncertainty and
accepting that you could lose money, freedom
5. Efficiency and Quality Orientation- always
finds ways to do things faster or with fewer resources or
at a lower cost.

• Involves activities of choosing a goal, identifying strategies


and action plans to use in order to accomplish the goals,
and making the efficient choice of resources to attain the
goals.
