Lesson4-Modeling Techniques

The document outlines various 3D modeling techniques, including polygonal modeling, curve and NURBS modeling, procedural modeling, and digital sculpting, emphasizing the importance of software tools like Autodesk 3Ds Max and Blender. It discusses methods such as extrusion, subdivision, and edge modeling, as well as the pros and cons of 3D scanning and photogrammetry. Key practices like modular concepts and kit bashing are also highlighted to enhance the modeling process.

MODELING

TECHNIQUES
 CHOOSE SOFTWARE TOOLS
In our case we will be using
Autodesk 3Ds Max. Aside
there are variety of
commercialize software tools
we can use.

WHAT YOU  FAMILIARIES THE SOFTWARE

SHOULD DO NAVIGATIONS AND
VIEWPORTS
BEFORE YOU CREATING 3D ASSETS ? Most of 3D Software are
similar in nature, but have a
few difference on its default
navigations, viewports, and
shortcut keys.
POLYGONAL MODELING

 Basic technique of
3D Modeling

 3D Primitive
Shapes to
Complex Shapes.

 Mesh Editing
POLYGONAL MODELING

There are two main technique used Polygon Modeling

 EXTRUSION can be applied by BOX MODELING

(1) Collapsing faces to itself inwards TECHNIQUE
(2) Extending faces outwards

In Blender, extrusion can be applied using:

Extrude Region
 Extrude (E)
 Extrude Manifold (ALT + E)
POLYGONAL MODELING

 SUBDIVISION
A key to create a high resolution 3D Models
MORE FACES = HIGH RESOLUTION MODELS

In Blender, we have may ways to add

Subdivisions, here are the view
 Bevel
 Inset
 Loop Tool
 Knife
POLYGONAL MODELING

How to smoothen the sharp edge?

BEVEL
 Select the edge with sharp edges.
 Click Bevel (Ctrl + B) in the Toolbar.
 Look for the pop-up Bevel Setting.
 You can start be adjusting width,
segments, shape and maternal
index.

This one of a few ways on smoothen the edges. We also

have auto smooth but I, personal don’t want to suggest
it if are modeling architectural model. Otherwise, you
might use it on modeling human figures.
POLYGONAL MODELING

EDGE MODELING
 Initial Outline
 Fill and Bridge
 Commonly used in creating
Human 3D models
CURVE AND NURBS MODELING

 Also known as SPLINE modeling.

 Create curve surface using Control
Points.

NURBS
Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline

This type of technique is for

modeling a more organics assets
such as human model
CURVE AND NURBS MODELING

In Blender, we have Curve object and Surface object to apply this technique
CURVE AND NURBS MODELING

In curve modeling you most

likely working on adjusting:

 Control Points
 Spline
 Object Options
 Modifier

Further lessons about NURBS Modeling

will be posted on your LAB.
PROCEDURAL MODELING

Technique that can be utilized

in creating 3D Models and
Texture.

IT WORKS WITH A SETS OF

RULE. The rules are integrated within the
algorithm that can be configured.
PROCEDURAL MODELING

PARAMETRIC
MODELING
Can be considered application of the procedural
technique

In Blender, we use Modifiers

to apply procedural technique
PROCEDURAL MODELING

PRO
 Ensures all your elements
follow the same style and
working principles.
 Easy to scale up and down
the properties.

CONS
 Complex code is need for a
organic-looking object.
3D SCANNING

Laser Scanner to collect

multiple angles of a
real-life objects.

Cons:
MESSY GEOMETRY
Light Scanner is quite
expensive
3D SCANNING VS PHOTOGRAMETRY

PHOTOGRAMETRY
Photography rather than light.

PROS:
Camera of your Choice
Can provide a better texturing
Also considered as texturing technique

CONS:
Multi-camera provide greater
result.
DIGITAL SCULPTING

This technique usual applied

when polishing the 3D Assets.

Use to add more details on the

3D Assets.

Blender have its own sculpting

workspace. Otherwise, ZBrush is
one of the compatible 3D
Sculpting Software to Blender.
Check here if you are interested to know more about ZBrush.
DIGITAL SCULPTING
MODULAR
CONCEPTS
One good practice
is to reuse a certain
part of a model to
easy create
variations.
KIT BASHING
Combining and modified
a pre-made part module
to create a new 3D
model.

Some are applying this

technique to easy create
picture out their
intended 3D output
KEY POINTS

It is important to know what software you will be using in create 3D

Assets.

There are various modeling techniques we can utilize based on our

aiming 3D output, to easily create some might used more than one
technique.
