Code-Mixing
• More than 7000 languages are spoken throughout the world.

• Half of world’s population is bilingual and involved in code-switching.

• Code-switching is the phenomena of spoken language.

Before 1950s, many scholars considered the use of code-switching as


sub-standard.
Kinds of code-switching

• 1. Situational code-switching
• When situation changes, code also changes.

• 2. Conversational code-switching
• Situation remains the same but there is shift in language.
Types of Code-switching
• There are three types of code-switching.

• 1. Inter-sentential code-switching

• 2. Intra-sentential code-switching

• 3. Tag-switching
1. Inter-sentential code-switching

• It occurs outside a sentence .

• E.g Kya aap ko meri bat samj nai ai. I can explain it again.
• What happened? Mai to yahan hu.
2. Intra-sentential code-switching

• It occurs within a sentence or clause.

• E.g Peshawar office mai aik assistant ki zarurt hy.


• Awam ko koi relief nai milla.
• Wo dekho kya khubsoorat scene/view hy.
• Mai ne socha thora relax ker lu .
3. Tag-switching

• Using tag-phrase or tag-word of another language is


called tag-switching.
• E.g
• I mean, for example, ao kanna, o lalla, basically, Actually,
Infect, You know etc.
• Chinese and English …………..chinglish
• Binglish ………….British-Indian English
• Singlish………..
