What is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a collection of interconnected devices that communicate with

each other to share resources, data, and services. These devices, often referred to as
nodes, can include computers, servers, printers, switches, routers, and other
hardware components.
KEY COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
NETWORK
1.Nodes: Devices connected to the network, such as
computers, servers, and printers.

2. Links: The physical or wireless connections that enable

data transfer between nodes. Examples include Ethernet
cables, Fiber optics, and Wi-Fi.

3. Switches: Devices that connect multiple devices within

a local area network (LAN) and use MAC addresses to
forward data to the correct destination.

4. Routers: Devices that connect different networks (e.g., a home network

to the internet) and route data packets between them.

5. Protocols: Rules and standards that govern how data is transmitted and
received. Examples include TCP/IP, HTTP, and FTP.

6. Network Interface Cards (NICs): Hardware components that allow

devices to connect to a network.
Types of Computer
Networks

There are mainly fOUR types of Computer

Networks

 Personal Area Network (PAN)

 Local Area Network (LAN)
 Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
 Wide Area Network (WAN)
Personal Area Network (PAN)

• The smallest computer network

• Devices may be connected through Bluetooth or other infra-red
enables devices
• It has a connectivity range of up to 10 metres
• It covers an area of up to 30 feet
• Personal devices belonging to a single person can be connected to
each other using PAN
Examples of personal area network
TYPES OF PERSONAL AREA NETWORK

Personal Area Network is divided into two categories.

• Wired Personal Area Network: The USB is used to
create a wired Personal Area Network.

• Wireless Personal Area Network: Wireless

Personal Area Networks (WPANs) are the connection
networks created by combining wireless
technologies like WIFI and Bluetooth. It is a network
with a short range.
Local Area Network (LAN)

 Systems connected in a small network like in a building or a small

office
 It is inexpensive
 It uses Ethernet or Token-ring technology
 Two or more personal computers can be connected through wires or
cables acting as nodes
EXAMPLE OF LOCAL AREA NETWORK
Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)

• A network that can be connected within a city,

for example, cable TV Connection
• It can be in the form of Ethernet, ATM,
Token-ring and FDDI
• It has a higher range
• This type of network can be used to connect
citizens with the various Organisations
EXAMPLE OF Metropolitan Area Network
(MAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)

• A network which covers over a country or a larger

range of people
• Telephonic lines are also connected through WAN
• Internet is the biggest WAN in the world
• Mostly used by Government Organisations to
manage data and information
