Random Variables

Definition: Random variable: A random variable is a real valued

function whose domain is the sample space and is denoted by X.

Eg. Let X be the number of heads in tossing a coin three

times.

Then the sample space S of this experiment is

Now,

There fore X takes the values 0, 1, 2 or 3.

For the same random experiment, if we define a new
random variable Y as , then

Probability Distribution of a Random Variable:
For the example-1 given above,

Also, here we can observe that,

Definition: The probability distribution of a
random variable X is the system of numbers

Where
Example 1: Two cards are drawn successively with
replacement from a well- shuffled deck of 52 cards. Find
the probability distribution of the number of aces.
Solution: Clearly the number of aces is a random variable, let it be X.

Clearly X can take the values 0, 1 or 2.

Since the draws are done with replacement, therefore, the two draws form independent
experiments.
Thus, the Probability distribution is

1.The random variable X has a probability distribution P(X) of the
following form, where k is some number. (19/1/1) (2M)

Determine the value of k.
