Module 2 Lesson 2

The document outlines various types of computers, including servers, desktops, workstations, laptops, and multifunction devices, highlighting their characteristics and uses. It differentiates between stationary devices (servers, desktops, workstations) and portable devices (laptops, tablets, PDAs, etc.). Additionally, it includes practice questions to reinforce understanding of the material.

SUBJECT MATTER:

Lesson 2 – Types
of Computers
OBJECTIVES:

• Identify the type of computers

• Differentiate portable devices
from stationary devices
Types of computers

1. Servers – a computer program

or device that provides a service
to another computer program and
its user, also known as the client.
Servers have multiple
CPU and large amounts of
RAM and multiple high
capacity disk drive that
provides fast information
retrieval.
Since services provided
by the servers are time and
time again may be available
and in need, mostly servers
contains duplicate or
redundant parts to prevent
from failing.
Server designs are:

1) blade design
2) stand alone
tower
3) rack mounted
2. Desktops - are personal computers
designed for regular use at a single location
on or near a desk due to its size and power
requirements.
Desktops are commonly
used to run applications
such as word processing,
spreadsheets and
networked applications
such as email and web
browsing.
3. Workstations are desktop PCs designed to
handle demanding workflows such as data
science, 3D design, video editing, and
engineering.
Workstations are high- They are designed for
powered business computers. specialized, high-end
applications like
engineering programs such
as CAD (Computer Aided
Design). Workstations are
used in 3-D graphics
design, video animation
and virtual reality
simulation.
As with servers, workstations
typically have multiple CPUs,
large amounts of RAM and
multiple, high-capacity disk
drives that are very fast.
Workstations
usually have very powerful
graphics capabilities and a
large monitor or multiple
monitors.
4. Laptops, also called
notebooks, are comparable
to desktops in usage and
processing capability.
However, they are portable
devices built to be
lightweight and use less
power, with a built-in mouse,
monitor and keyboard.
5. Multifunction devices can combine a PDA, cell
phone, digital camera and music player.
It can provide internet
access and wireless networking
but has limited processing
capability. Other portable
devices, such as PDAs or pocket
PCs, have less powerful CPUs
and less RAM. They have small
screens with limited display
capabilities and may have a
small input keyboard.
Servers, desktops and workstations are
all designed as stationary devices. They are
not portable, like laptops.

These portable devices vary in size,

power and graphic capability and includes
laptop or notebook PC, Tablet PC, Pocket PC,
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Gaming
device and Cell phones.
Summary:
1. What are the types of computers?

2. Which are stationary devices and

which are portable devices?
ANSWER:
1. servers, desktops, workstations, laptops,
multifunction devices
2. Stationary devices - servers, desktops,
workstations

Portable devices - laptop or notebook PC,

Tablet PC, Pocket PC, Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA), Gaming device, cell phones
