• Generally, Computers used for business purposes fit into three types of profiles:
 Standard Client

 Thin Client

 Workstation
 Standard Client

• A standard client is an ordinary PC commonly used in every home or office.

• It is also known as thick client, fat client or heavy client. Standard clients are independent and
capable of functioning without any server or network.
• Advantages of a standard client
 It can be used offline.

 It can increase flexibility.

 It improves the performance of multimedia applications.

 It provides better peripheral support.

 It does not require any server or network support.


 Thin Client

• Thin client is a type of desktop terminal that does not need any hard drive, and runs the
operating system locally.
• All data is stored in a central server, and is basically designed to run on a network server.

• Thin clients are generally used to get virtual desktop infrastructure.

• It is generally used for cost effective purpose. Thin clients are used in various organizations and
industries that have different requirements but has a common objective.
 Workstation

• A workstation is defined as a computer designed for performing technical and scientific


applications. The important workstations that are in use are:
 Graphics/CAD/CAM workstation

 Audio/Video Editing workstation

 Virtualization workstation
 Workstation

• Graphics/CAD/CAM Workstation: Graphic workstation is used in image editing and desktop


publishing, web designing, etc. CAD/CAM workstation is used by engineer or an architect to
design the blueprint of a building.
 Workstation

• Audio/Video Editing Workstation: Audio/Video workstation is used to create and edit audio
and video files. This type of workstation is also used in music industry for recording music,
making music CDs, etc. In this type of workstation dual or multiple monitors are required to
keep track of every scene or sound.
 Workstation

• Virtualization Workstation: Hardware Virtualization is the most modern concept that is based
on cloud computing. Both the virtualization hardware and software are used in the
virtualization workstation. Virtualization workstation is highly used in a situation where it is
required to run the software in different types of operating systems.
 Home Use PCs

• Home use personal computer works functionally well for small network and requires sufficient
memory and store space.
• Common PC types used at homes are:
 Home server PC

 Gaming PC

 Home Theatre PC
 Home Use PCs

• Home Server PC: It functions in a client-server network. These types of servers have qualified
custom configurations. A personal computer can also be made a home server if it has sufficient
memory and storage capacity. Home server PC can provide the function of web serving, email,
IRC, instant messaging, etc.
 Home Use PCs

• Gaming PC: Gaming PC is basically designed for playing games on the PC. To run the high-quality
gaming software smoothly, specialized hardware is required which is not available in a general
PC. This is the reason why a specialized gaming PC is required for playing various computer
games.
 Home Use PCs

• Home Theatre PC: Home Theatre PC is mainly used for playing music and movies. This type of
PC has high audio, video and display features. Home Theatre PC (HTPC) is also called as “Living
Room PC”. It is similar to TV interface but is customizable in such a way that the function of DVD
player, video player and audio player are also incorporated in it.
