Introduction:

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are brushless and have very high reliability
and efficiency.
Due to their permanent magnet rotor, they also have higher torque with smaller frame size and
no rotor current, all of which are advantages over AC Induction Motors (AICMs).
With their high power-to-size ratio, PMSMs can help make your design smaller without the loss
of torque.
Applications:
 industrial drives, e.g., pumps, fans, blowers, mills, hoists, handling
systems.
 elevators and escalators, people movers, light railways and streetcars
(trams), electric road vehicles, aircraft flight control surface actuation.
Modeling And Designing:
 First we generate a new file in ansys software.
 Than select RMxprt Design (Adjust Speed Synchronous Machine).
 This is your choice to select 2D or 3D designing in Maxwell software.
 Now we adjust the Machine design values like machine type, rotor type, no of poles etc.
Stator Designing:
 In machine design category we select the stator point and add different values of stator like
outer diameter , inner diameter .
 Stacking factor is keeping 0.95.
 Number of slots are 12.
 And slot type is 4.
 We select steel type(M22-29G). If in libraries not added than add material in libraries.
Winding selections:
 Select single layered and parallel batch winding.
Rotor designing:
 Select the inner and outer diameter, steel types core and pole type 5 and stacking factor is
0.95.
 Add the rotor pole setting .Add the magnet type of (Vacodym 744) .
Stator and rotor:
Final combine for stator and rotor are as follow:-
2D designing of PMSM:
Click on setup #1 in results option and select the 2D design of current model of PMSM motor.
Analysis and results:
 Add rated output power 110 Kw with rated voltages 300 V and motor speed 13300 and
temperature is 75 .
 Now add results options and create Rxm report.
Analysis and results:
 Efficacy and torque curve:-  Output power and torque curve:-
Analysis and results:
Induced winding voltages and rated Winding current under load:-
speed:-
Final running of motor:
 Adjust the excitations. And add the core and stator option open for core losses.
 Add the stop time and 0.0012s and stop size 6e-006 and add to list.
 Select the stator and rotor of PMSM.
 Right click on over layer field and select the B field vector.
 Now the time to plots the graph at 0.000139878s.
 Modify the B field and generate magnetic fields.
Final running of motor:
Add click on B field and further click on B vector filed and select animation option to create
the animation running 0f motor.
3D designing of PMSM:
 Make all the steps to again to make the rotor and stator of motor.
 Than select the step up option on analysis and select the 3D design to generate the 3D
design of motor.
Selection 0f Boundaries:
 There are two types of boundaries :-
 Maters And Slaves.
 Select the master boundaries of motor and only inner part of motor to check the magnetic
flux lines of motor.
Final running of motor:
 Select the rotor and stator part of master boundaries to make magnetic lines of forces.
 Click on B field select the field vector and plot the all fields.
 Add the stop time and 0.0012s and stop size 6e-006 and add to list.
 Now the time to plots the graph at 0.000139878s.
Final running of motor:
 Select the B vector field and select the animation option to make the running animation of
3D PMSM.
Final wave form of Torque:
 Moving Torque*Moving Speed Curve:-
Advantages of PMSM:
 Low torque ripple:-
This motor has low torque ripple so it can generate constant torque. Also its ability to maintain full torque at low
speeds
 High efficiency:-
Permanent magnet motor full-load efficiency is higher than an AC induction motor. It’s a rotor magnet made by
using a permanent magnet so this motor has high efficiency.
 High power density:-
The smaller size and less coil make a high power density. So it makes high speed at a low noise level. The heat
transfer is also better, and the cooling system is simple
 Low heat generation:-
It has only stator winding and no brushes so its heat generation is low compared with brush motor.
 DC power source:-
Don’t need an extra DC power source for it. The AC supply is provided on the stator and the permanent magnets
are on the rotor.
Disadvantages of PMSM:
 Permanent magnet synchronous motors require a drive:-
Its rotor has constant magnetic but it needs the variable magnetic field so these motors want to variable frequency
power source to start. Permanent magnet synchronous motors require a drive to operate it cannot run without a
driver.
 Complex control system:-
Basically two methods of controlling motors there are armature current controlling and field current controlling.
But in this type of motors, we can change only stator current. There is only one source in this motor AC supply on
stator so the only way to control the motor is by controlling the AC supply on the stator. This needs a complex
control system including power electronics and microcontrollers.
 Cost:-
Permanent magnet motor solutions tend to need a higher initial cost than AC induction motors so more difficult to
start up than AC induction motors. (High-cost magnet-Permanent magnets and their performance is also based on
the quality of magnet).
