LINES AND
ANGLES
Objectives
:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to –

 Define the straight line.
 Properties of straight lines.
 Define the term line segment.
 Define and name the type of angles.
INTRODUCTIO
N

Lines And Angles are the basic shapes in geometry. Lines are figures that
are made up of infinite points extending indefinitely in both directions.
Lines are straight and have negligible depth or width. There are a variety
of lines you will learn about, such as perpendicular lines, intersecting lines,
transversal lines, etc. An angle is a figure in which two rays emerge from a
common point. You may also come across alternate and corresponding
angles in this field. Geometry shapes and their properties are the most
practical branch of mathematics.
Straight
Lines

A lines that extends to both sides to infinity and has no curves is

called a straight line.
Properties of
Straight Lines.
Straight lines have the following
properties –
 The length of straight line is endless.
 There are no area and volume in a
straight line.
 A one-dimensional figure is straight
line.
 A single point can have an endless
number of lines passing through it
but only one line through travel
through two points.
Check Your
Progress:

1)Define the term straight line.

2)Name two properties of straight lines.

Line Segment:

A Line segment is a pieces or part of a line having two

end point.
ANGLE:

An angle is formed when two

straight line or rays meet at a
common end point. The
common point of contact is
called the vertices of an angle.
Check Your
Progress:

1)Define the term line segment.

2)State the difference between a line and line segment.

3)Name various parts of a angle.

Type of
Angle:

There are six types of angles depending on their size and degrees.

Angle

Right Straight Acute Obtuse Reflex Full

Angle Angle Angle Angle Angle Angle
(a) Right
Angle

If the measures of the angle

between two rays is exactly
equal to 900 then the angle is
called a Right Angle.
(b) Straight
Angle:

A straight angle is define as

an angle that is equal to
180. The reason it is called
a straight angle is because
it appears as a straight line.
(c) Acute
Angle:

An angle which is measuring

less than 90 is called an
acute angle. This angle is
smaller than the right angle.
(d) Obtuse
Angle:

An obtuse angle is an angle

which is greater than 90 and
less than 180. In other words,
an obtuse angle is between a
right angle and a straight
angle.
(e) Reflex
Angle:

A reflex angle is an
angle that is more than
180 and less than 360.
(f) Full Angle:

An angle equal to 360

is called full angle. A
full angle also called a
complete angle or
round angle.
EXERCIS
E

1)Write the definition of straight lines with example.

2)Write various types of angle.

3)Describe the properties straight line with diagram.
