Graphs of Functions
Set is a collection of well-defined objects.
Eg. A is a set of local fruits.
A = { durian, rambutan, mangosteen}

X f(x)
The function f which maps x to x2
is written as :
2
f :x x
or
2
f ( x) x
f : x x2
means that ‘the function f maps x onto x+2’
We write f(x) = x + 2
When x = 3, f(3) = 3 + 2 = 5
Value of x = object = 3
f(3) = image = 5
A function can be represented in the
form of
a)Ordered pair (x,y)
b)Table
c)Graph
d)Equation
Given set P = {1,2,3} and set Q = {4,5,6}
The function f maps P to Q by adding 3.
Represent this function using
(a)Ordered pair (b)Table (c)Graph (d)
Equation
(a) {(1,4),(2,5),(3,6)}
(d) y = x + 3
or
f(x) = x + 3
Steps to draw a graph
1.Construct a table of values for the given
function.
2.Draw and label each axis with a given
scale or any suitable scale.
3.Plot the point (x,y) for the ordered pairs
from the table.
4.Join the points to form a straight line or
a smooth curve.
