Picturing Motion Motion Graph

The document provides an overview of motion graphs, including displacement vs. time, velocity vs. time, and acceleration vs. time graphs. It explains how to analyze motion using these graphs, focusing on concepts such as slope, velocity, and the relationship between position and time. Additionally, it includes exercises to match descriptions of motion to the appropriate graphs.

Picturing

Motion
Graphical Analysis of Motion
Objectives
• Determine the different types
of motion using graphs
• Analyze motion using
graphs
• line graphs used to
represent changes and
Motion Graph patterns in an object’s motion.
what do you know about a
slope?
There are 3 types of MOTION graphs
Displacement(position) vs. Acceleration vs. Time
Time

a (m/s/s)
d (m)

Velocity vs. Time

v (m/s)

Displacement (Position)-Time Graph
Slope – A basic graph model
A basic model for understanding graphs in physics is SLOPE.

Using the model - Look at the formula for velocity.

Who gets to play the role of the slope? Velocity

Who gets to play the role of the y-axis or the rise? Displacement
d (m)
v
=
e

Who get to play the role of the x-axis or the run? Time
op
sl

What does all the mean? It means that if your are given a Displacement
vs. Time graph, to find the velocity of an object during specific time
t (s)
intervals simply find the slope.

time passes by
• The object is speeding up

Displacement vs. Time graph
What is the velocity of the object from 0
seconds to 3 seconds?
The velocity is the slope!
Analyze this
Looking at each graph,
1. how will you describe each
motion?
2. At which points does the object
moves or stops moving at Graphs
A and B?
3. At which points does the object
gains speed?
4. At which points does the object
decrease in speed?
Match each description to its appropriate graph. Write your answer on
a piece of paper.

1. A boy running for 20 minutes then stops to rest.

2. A rock placed on top of a table.
3. A car is slowing down.
4. A child is resting in the park.
5. A moving vehicle suddenly stops and remain at rest for some time.
