Methods (5 marks)
• Don’t copy from the handbook just refer to it
• Add any top tips or deviations from the methods
• What did you learn to do differently? Write something
RESULTS (30 Marks)
• Write in text and tables or figure.
• Label the tables with a number and a title.
• If in doubt look at a scientific paper
• e.g. The urine sample was plated onto Brilliant agar and cultured at
370C overnight. The bacteria isolated were identified using Gram
staining and a series of biochemical tests. The results are summarised
in Table 1 below.

• Discussion of the results not repetition of results
• Do they compare with what is already known. If not, why not?

• Make sure you answer any questions in the Lab Manual
within the discussion section

summative assessment and this
affected their grade.
• The formative assessment is
COMPULSORY and will need to
be signed off.
• Just do it as this will enhance
your performance in the
module.
The perfect Scientific Lab
Report
• Title: Write one
• Introduction: includes some background to the experiments and bacteria, the
purpose of the experiment, perhaps a hypothesis
• Methods: brief and refer to the handbook but include any deviations and top tips
• Results: in words AND tables and figures
• Discussion: is NOT a repeat of the results but discusses what the results mean in the
bigger context and demonstrate outside reading. Remember to answer the
questions in the handout
• Conclusion: Have a last sentence to conclude
• References: If you didn’t say it or do it a reference is required!
• Word count: 2000 words+/- 10%
