Slide 1: Introduction

Digital Twin Tech. : A digital twin is a

digital representation of a physical
object, process, service or environment
that behaves and looks like its
counterpart in the real-world.
A digital twin can be a digital replica of
an object in the physical world.
History of DTT
 The concept of digital twins was first put forward by
David Gelernter’s 1991 book ‘Mirror Worlds,’ with
Michael Grieves of the Florida Institute of Technology
going on to apply the concept to manufacturing.
 By 2002, Grieves had moved to the University of
Michigan when he formally introduced the digital twin
concept at a Society of Manufacturing Engineers
conference in Troy, Michigan.
 it was NASA who first embraced the digital twin concept
and, in a 2010 Roadmap Report, John Vickers of NASA
gave the concept its name.
 The digital twin concept spread further still in 2017,
when Gartner named it as one of the top 10 strategic
technology trends. Since then, the concept has been used
in an ever-growing array of industrial applications and
processes.

What is DTT?
A digital twin is a technology that allows the
creation of a virtual copy of any entity. However, a
true digital twin is more than a simple replica of a
product, an equipment piece, or a workshop. The
underlying concept of the technology implies that
there is a real-time data exchange between a digital
twin and its physical counterpart. This ensures that
the data obtained through the implementation of
the technology is relevant and corresponds with
ever-changing real-life conditions and external
influences.

DTT in Construction

07/03/2025 9
Digital twins are created by gathering and
combining real-world information about the
building or structure using technologies
such as 3D laser scanners, drones, sensors,
cameras, and other IoT-related devices.
When supported by IoT and AI.
Digital twins are kept in sync with their
corresponding physical asset through BIM
and 3D modeling software, scanning and
point cloud data, surveying data, and any
number of IoT sensors and devices that send
information back to the twin in real-time.

By amassing data from several sources, and integrating that
information into a 3D model, construction teams are able to gain
acute insight into every component. With the aid of digital twin
capabilities, BIM models are evolving to become “living,
automatically updated representations of physical assets they
represent.

How Digital Twins
Work
Data Collection: sensors, IoT
devices, real-time data gathering
Data Integration: aggregation
and organization of data
Analytics and AI: processing and
analyzing information
Visualization: representation of
the twin

Types of DTT
Component twin
Product twin
System twin
Process twin

Component twin
The component twin, also sometimes
called parts twin, is the lowest level of
digital twin technology
It corresponds with the smallest elements
of the system — a certain part of the
equipment or product, e.g., a sensor, a
switch, a valve, etc.
By digitally modeling these parts and
subjecting them to dynamic simulations,
designers and engineers can see how the
parts can be improved to ensure their
integrity in likely scenarios.
While this type of digital twin mimics the
manufacturing layout on a minor level, it
enables enhanced surveillance of the
equipment parts and their timely
maintenance, which, in turn, ensures the
stability of the production process and

Product twin
product twins, also called Asset
twins, are digital versions of a
physical product rather than its
individual parts. While asset twins
can technically be composed of
numerous component twins, their
purpose is to understand how their
various parts operate together
within a single real-world product.
For example, a wind turbine might
have an associated asset twin used
to monitor its performance and
identify possible parts failure due to
common wear and tear.
The implementation of product
digital twins allows engineers to
acquire insights regarding
equipment performance and detect

potential improvement cases
Process twin
The highest level of digital twins, process
twins, connects the system twins into one
entity that explores the collaboration and
synchronization between different
systems. This solution gives the maximal
view of the processes and workflows
within the plant or factory, which allows
for a much deeper and more versatile
analysis of output.
Process twinning helps to tweak inputs
like the rate of feeding raw materials,
production temperature, etc., and gain
data on outputs without disrupting the
actual manufacturing process and
jeopardizing the production quality. As a
result, executives get a chance to
conveniently and harmlessly test different
business hypotheses, efficiently track

business metrics and enable 16
System twin
System twins duplicate assets on the
system level, representing how
different assets combine into functional
units (therefore, you can also encounter
the name “unit twins” applied to these
solutions). System twins give a large-
scale overview of the factory or plant,
making it possible to test different
system configurations to achieve
optimal effectiveness or reveal new
business opportunities for the
introduction of additional profit
sources.
The real-time monitoring and
simulation on this level go beyond the
detection of malfunctions and failures
achieved through simpler types of
digital twins. It is a path to gaining data
