Lecture#04

Chapter 5 of the AutoCAD course covers the concept of layers, their properties, and how to manage them effectively. It explains the advantages of using layers for organization, efficiency, and customization in architectural design. The chapter also details methods for creating, modifying, and controlling layers within AutoCAD, including setting colors, line types, and line weights.

LAYERS AND INQUIRY CHAPTER 5
COMMANDS
You will learn in this chapter

 What are layers in AutoCAD?

 How to create and set layer properties
 What are layer controls?
 How to use Quick Properties and Properties
What are Layers in
AutoCAD
Layers in AutoCAD are similar to the concept of physical transparencies
or tracing paper sheets. They allow you to organize and separate
different elements of a drawing, each assigned with specific properties,
such as line types, colors, and visibility

Think of layers as groups that can be isolated, locked,

or modified independently of one another. For
example:
 Layer 1: Walls
 Layer 2: Doors
 Layer 3: Windows
 Layer 4: Electrical wiring
Why Use Layers?
 Using layers offers several advantages:
 Organization: Layers allow you to group similar objects (e.g.,
walls, doors, furniture) in separate layers, making the drawing
cleaner and easier to navigate.
 Efficiency: You can hide or show certain layers when focusing on
specific parts of the design, improving performance when working
with large files.
 Customization: Assign different properties (like color, line type,
line weight) to each layer for better clarity and distinction between
elements.
 Editing Flexibility: Locking layers prevents unintended
modifications while still allowing visibility.
 Printing Control: You can set different layers for printing or non-
printing to ensure that only necessary objects are included in the
final plot
Each object on a layer will hold the properties of that
layer, meaning the object will have the same color, line-
type, and line-weight of the layer it resides in. This
setting is called BYLAYER.

Each layer should have a name, which will be considered as the

first step of the creation process. Proper naming should follow
rules:
 Name length should not exceed 255 characters
 Use all letters (small or capital)
 Use all numbers
 Use (-) hyphen, (_) underscore, and ($) dollar sign
What is the Zero Layer?

Zero Layer (Layer 0) is a special, default layer that comes pre-

installed in every AutoCAD drawing. You cannot delete or rename
this layer, and it has unique characteristics compared to other layers

DEFPOINT is specific to
dimension control points and
cannot be plotted
How to Create a New Layer

Method 1: From the Ribbon Method 2: Using the Command Line

On the Home tab of the Ribbon, find the Type LA in the command line and
Layers panel. press Enter. This will also open the
Click on the Layer Properties button to Layer Properties Manager window.
open the Layer Properties Manager.

Create a New Layer

In the Layer Properties Manager
window, click on the New Layer icon.
This icon looks like a sheet of paper
with a star and is usually located near
the top-left corner of the window.
How to Set a Color for a
Layer
You can use one of 256 colors
available in AutoCAD. The first
seven colors can be set using
the name or its number (from
color 1 to color 7). They are:
 Red (1)
 Yellow (2)
 Green (3)
 Cyan (4)
 Blue (5)
 Magenta (6)
 Black/White (7)
Using the Layer Properties Manager, select
the desired layers Using the Color field, click
the icon of the color, and you will see the
following dialog box:
Another way to set up (or modify) a layer’s
color is by using the pop-up list in the
Layers panel,
How to Set the Line-type for
Layers
Open the Layer Properties Manager.
Create a new layer called "Dashed" or select an
existing one.
In the Line-type column next to the layer name, click
Continuous (or the current line-type).
In the Select Line-type dialog box, click Load.
Scroll through the list and select DASHED, then click
OK.
In the Select Line-type window, click DASHED and
then click OK.
The "Dashed" layer now has the dashed line-type
How to Set a Lineweight for Layers

Open the Layer Properties Manager.

Select the layer you want to modify (e.g., "Walls").
In the Lineweight column next to the layer name, click the
current lineweight value (e.g., "Default").
In the Lineweight Settings dialog box, select 0.50 mm and
click OK.
Close the Layer Properties Manager.
Turn on Lineweight Display from the Status Bar to see the
thicker lines
How to Set the Current Layer

Open the Layer Properties Manager.

Locate the layer named Walls.
Click on the Walls layer to select it.
Click the Set Current button (green
checkmark).
Close the Layer Properties Manager.
Verify that any new objects created will
be placed on the Walls layer.
LAYER CONTROLS
Freeze has a deeper effect than off, as
The commands objects in a frozen layer will not be

Moving Objects from One Layer to
Another
All similar objects must reside in the same
layer, but mistakes may occur. If you draw on
the wrong layer and you want to move the
objects to the right layer, you can use the
Match command.

Select objects to be changed:
