Basic Human Aspiration –

Continuous Happiness & Prosperity

Preamble
From the previous lectures we have seen that:
Holistic development is the transformation from animal consciousness to
human consciousness
The role of education-sanskar is to enable this transformation by way of
ensuring the development of the competence to live with Definite
Human Conduct
For this, the education-sanskar has to ensure
1. Right understanding in every child
2. The capacity to live in relationship with the other human beings
3. The capacity to identify the need of physical facility and the skills &
practice for sustainable production of more than what is required leading
to the feeling of prosperity
These are the 3 components of human education-sanskar, if it has to
ensure development of definite human conduct
Parents, teachers & society/environment have the responsibility of
providing such education-sanskar

Preamble
The process of transformation is a process of self-exploration,
self-investigation

The Purpose of this Workshop/Course is to initiate the Process of Self-

exploration, Self-investigation in you, so you can be aware of your
natural acceptance (swatva), live in harmony within (swatantrata) and
ultimately live in harmony with the entire existence (swarajya)
4
Basic Human Aspiration
1. Happiness
2. Prosperity
3. The continuity of Happiness & Prosperity

Let us find out:

1. Do we desire for Happiness?
2. Do we desire for Prosperity?
3. Do we desire for the continuity of both (happiness & prosperity)?

So, you can check whether you desire for happiness or not? Whether
you desire for prosperity or not? Whether you desire for continuity of
both or not?

Is there anyone who doesn’t want to be happy? Is there anyone who

doesn’t want to be prosperous? Is there anyone who wants
happiness or prosperity only sometimes, not always?
5
Basic Human Aspiration
So, our desires are not unlimited or indefinite

Basically we have only two desires

1. Continuity of Happiness and
2. Continuity of Prosperity

Now we can explore what is happiness and what is prosperity

How the Other Half Dies, Susan George, 1976 Penguin
…by the time you finish reading this
book (approx. 6 hrs) 400 people
would have died of hunger or
diseases caused by hunger…

Contrary to popular opinion,

malnutrition and starvation are not
the result of over-population, of poor
climate or lack of cultivatable land…

The other half is dying because the

first half is not rightly utilizing the
resources...

Hunger is not a scourge but a scandal

15
Lack Right Understanding is the problem, Not Physical Facility
Of the 4.2 billion tons of food produced, more than 1 billion tons of food
is lost or wasted every year, UN-backed report finds (11 May 2011)

About a third of all the food produced for human consumption each year – or
roughly 1.3 billion tons – is lost or wasted, according to a
new study commissioned by the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO)

Global Food Production is 6 times requirement

Global Food Wastage is 1/3rd of production
Wastage is enough to feed 1300 crore people/year
Have we understood right utilisation?
Is it a question of production?
Is it a question of distribution?
Is it a question of relationship?
Is it a question of right understanding?
It is a question of right education-sanskar

FAQ
1. What is the meaning of “definite human conduct”? Is it following all the
social norms?

2. According to Maslow, physiological needs (physical facility) are the most

basic need of human being. Only after that is satisfied, the other needs
become relevant. We can easily see this in people who don’t have enough
to eat…

3. Animals are not satisfied just by physical facility. For them also, relationship
is important (example of pets).

4. By using the word “animal consciousness”, why are we demeaning the

animals?

5. Competition is of course important – there is so much struggle in the

society. Only the fittest survive or thrive. Isn’t it?

6. If we are satisfied, then what will happen to development? Won’t it stop?

An Appraisal of the Current Scenario
The way to ensure both happiness and prosperity is interpreted as
accumulation of physical facility (unlimited)

The impact or result of such a program can be seen:

Accumulation
of physical
facility With Exploitation Opposition Struggle War
(unlimited!) Human

With Rest People are largely concerned about these

of Nature side effects

Violation of
Resource
Cyclic, Mutually Depletion
Enriching
Process
(SoilTree
Wood Ash  Environmental Global Warming
Pollution
Soil)
26
Notions about Prosperity
Prosperity = Physical Facility

Continuous Prosperity = Maximum (Unlimited) Accumulation of Physical

Facility
(even if it means struggling to meet the unlimited wants, as resources
are limited)

27
Notions about Happiness
Favourable Sensation = Happiness

Physical thing  Contact with senses of body  Sensation (info from body)
 Tasted by self (I)
- If taste is favorable  Happiness (Temporary)
- If taste is unfavourable  Unhappiness (Temporary)

Happiness from favourable sensation of Sound, Touch, Form, Taste, Smell

Happiness from indulgence of: Food, Sleep, Fear/Security, Sex
(शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, रस, गंध की रुचिकर संवेदना से सुख
आहार, निद्रा, भय, मैथुन के भोग से सुख)

Sensation can be a source of excitement. Since it only provides temporary

happiness, one gets bored, keeps changing from one sensation to another

Sensation is not a source of continuous happiness (harmony):

Tasty-Necessary  Tasty-Unnecessary  Tasteless-Unnecessary  Intolerable
Dependence on other / outside (partantrata)
28
Notions about Happiness
Favourable Feeling from Other = Happiness

Other Human Being  Expression of Feeling  Feeling Received &

Evaluated by Self (I)
- If evaluation is favorable  Happiness (Temporary)
- If evaluation is unfavourable  Unhappiness (Temporary)

Feeling from other can not be a source of continuous happiness

(harmony)
Dependence on other / outside (partantrata)

29
Notions about Happiness With Right Understanding
Physical Facility = Happiness Right utilisation of physical facility

Sensation = Happiness One purpose of sensation is to

keep body healthy
Excitement = Happiness Excitement may be temporary
happiness
Domination = Happiness Co-existence, Complimentarity

Fulfillment of All Desires Fulfillment of Right Desires only

= Happiness

30
Sum Up
Prevailing notions:
 Happiness is getting favourable sensation from other / outside.
Happiness is getting favourable feeling from other
 Prosperity is accumulation of physical facility (unlimited!)

Impact of prevailing notions:

 With human being
– domination, exploitation, opposition, struggle, war…
 With rest of nature
– exploitation, resource depletion, pollution… global warming, climate
change…
Correct notions:
 Having the right understanding and right feeling in the self is
Happiness
 The feeling of having more than required physical facility is Prosperity

Sum Up
Human being is a co-existence of Self (I) and Body

Self (I) is consciousness. Its needs are feelings in consciousness (like

happiness) and these needs are fulfilled by activity of consciousness, i.e.
Right Understanding & Right Feelings
Body is material. Its needs are material (like food) and these needs are fulfilled
by material, i.e. Physio chemical things

The needs of consciousness can not be fulfilled by material

The needs of material can not be fulfilled by consciousness alone

The recognition & fulfillment of the body is definite

The recognition & fulfillment in the self (I) is on the basis of knowing, assuming
 If the assumption is based on knowing, the assumption is right and the
recognition & fulfillment is correct  definite conduct
 If the assumption is without knowing, the assumption may or may not be
right , so the recognition & fulfillment is uncertain  indefinite conduct

FAQ
Some Implications of a wrong assumption
If the assumption is Human Being = Body

Then happiness is sought through

 sensation (through the body) or
 getting the right feeling from the other

As a result
 The body is harmed due to excessive consumption or over indulgence to
get favourable sensation
 Continuity of happiness can not be ensured
 There is a major impact on family, society, nature…

e.g.
Over eating, consumption of "junk food" etc. is common
A large number of diseases are psychosomatic in nature
Today many of the complaints are related to the lack of feeling
43
FAQ: Is Self = Ego?
Ans: When you do not understand the self, you sometimes over-
evaluate the self and at other times under-evaluate the self

This over-evaluation of the self is Ego

Under-evaluation of the self is Depression

Both are caused by lack of understanding the self

Desires based on Natural Acceptance lead to harmonious thought &

expectation. This is harmony in the Self (I). This is the state of
Swatantrata. This is the state of happiness. In this state, the
behaviour/work is also mutually fulfilling – the conduct is definite

Desires based on preconditioning or sensation may lead to contradiction

in thought & expectation. This is disharmony in the Self (I). This is the

(Understanding Prosperity)
Self-exploration, Self-investigation
1. Content of Self Exploration:
a. Desire () - Aim, Purpose – Happiness, Prosperity  Continuity

b. Program () – Process of achieving the desire, action

Happiness = To be in Harmony

(to keep the body in good health)
– for nurturing, protection and right utilisation of the body

The required physical facility can be identified

Limited, Limited, Limited quantity

Physical Facility for nurturing, protection and right utilisation of the body
is required in a limited quantity

If we can see that, then we can understand the meaning of prosperity

93
Prosperity
Prosperity – The feeling of having / producing more than required
Physical Facility
2 1

1 – Identification of required physical facility (including the required

quantity)
– with right understanding

2 – Ensuring availability/ production of more than required physical

facility
– with right skills

A prosperous person thinks of right utilisation, nurturing the other

“ deprived “ “ “ accumulation, exploiting “ “

95
In lecture 4, we had seen that we can observe two categories of human
beings

1.Lacking physical facility, unhappy deprived

2.Having physical facility, unhappy deprived
Now we can see that if the identification of required physical facility is
missing, then one can only shift between category 1 & category 2

While we want to be
3.Having physical facility, happy prosperous

This is possible only with

a- the right identification of required physical facility and
b- availability / production of more than required physical facility

96
Gross Misunderstanding 1 – Human Being = Body
Human Being Body
=
Need Respect Physical Facility (Eg. Food,
= Clothes)

Continuous Unlimited
=

Accumulation of Physical
Facility – Unlimited!

Deprivation

Check your assumptions about Human Being

97
Gross Misunderstanding 2 – There is a Shortage of Physical Facility
Data: Of the 4.2 billion tons of food produced, more than 1 billion tons of food
is lost or wasted every year, UN-backed report finds (11 May 2011)
About a third of all the food produced for human consumption each year – or
roughly 1.3 billion tons – is lost or wasted, according to a
new study commissioned by the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO)

Global Food Production is 6 times requirement

Global Food Wastage is 1/3rd of production
Wastage is enough to feed 1300 crore people/year

Have we understood human needs?

Have we understood right utilisation?
Is it a question of production or distribution?
Is it a question of relationship?
Is it a question of right understanding?
It is a question of right education-sanskar

Sum Up
Human Being is co-existence of Self(I) and Body
The Self(I) is central to human existence; Body is an instrument of the Self(I)
The transaction between Self(I) and Body is only in the form of information

The Self(I) and the Body are in Harmony when there is a feeling of Sanyam in
the Self(I) and Health in the Body
 Sanyam = Feeling of responsibility toward the body – for Nurturing, Protection
and Right Utilization of the Body
 Health = The body acts according to Self(I) and parts of the body are in
harmony (in order)

Physical Facility is required, in a limited quantity, for Nurturing, Protection &

Right Utilisation of the Body

Prosperity = Feeling of having / producing more than required physical facility

1. Identification of required physical facility (including the required quantity) –
with right understanding
2. Ensuring availability/ production of more than required physical facility –
with right skills
100
Home Work
1. Do you have a feeling of sanyam (responsibility toward your body)?
– continuous?

2. Is your body healthy?

3. Find out – how much physical facility is required in your family; how
much physical facility is available. An on that basis are you
prosperous or deprived?

4. Do you have a feeling of prosperity? – continuous?

5. Do you think of
 Right utilisation of physical facility and nurturing others (human beings / rest of
nature)?
 Accumulating more physical facility or exploiting others?

101
Questions?
Some Implications of a wrong assumption
If the assumption is Human Being = Body

Then happiness is sought through

 sensation (through the body) or
 getting the right feeling from the other

As a result
 The body is harmed due to excessive consumption or over indulgence to
get favourable sensation
 Continuity of happiness can not be ensured
 There is a major impact on family, society, nature…

e.g.
Over eating, consumption of "junk food" etc. is common
A large number of diseases are psychosomatic in nature
Today many of the complaints are related to the lack of feeling
104
Which type of Economics can be called Development
Take-Take Economics (dominate/exploit HB, exploit rest of nature)
Feeling: opposition
Result: both try to maximise their share (profit maximisation)
Needs are undefined / unlimited + resources are limited  Everyone is bound
to be deprived
Give-Take Economics
Feeling: indifferent or opposition
Give-Give Economics (both work for mutual enrichment)
Feeling: Relationship
1. Identify the needs  Needs are definite
2. Produce more than what is required
by cyclic, mutually enriching process
(more is for sharing in relationship)  Resources are more than what
is required

Everyone (all) can be prosperous

105
Why “More than Required Physical Facility”
If my family is prosperous, then:

1.We identify the required physical facility for the family (including the
required quantity) – with right understanding

2.We produce more than the required physical facility using cyclic,
mutually enriching process – with right skills

3.We consume as much as is required (for nurturing, protection & right

utilisation of the body), and not more – with a feeling of sanyam

4.We share the rest for mutual fulfillment in relationship & for order in
society – with a sense of responsibility in relationship
