Noise

Noise pollution is defined as unwanted sound that disrupts daily activities and is recognized as a significant environmental issue by the World Health Organization. Major sources include traffic, industrial activities, and urbanization, with specific noise standards set by the Indian government. The health effects of noise pollution range from hearing damage to increased stress and productivity loss, necessitating control measures and community awareness initiatives.

NOISE POLLUTION

WHAT IS NOISE POLLUTION?

 Sound that is unwanted or disrupts one’s quality of life is
called as noise. When there is lot of noise in the
environment, it is termed as noise pollution.

 Sound becomes undesirable when it disturbs the normal

activities such as working, sleeping, and during
conversations.

 It is an underrated environmental problem because of the

fact that we can’t see, smell, or taste it.

 World Health Organization stated that “Noise must be

recognized as a major threat to human well-being”
SOURCES OF NOISE POLLUTION?
 Traffic:It is the most important sources of
noise in urban area, highways, etc
 Industrial : Moving machinery and
equipments and steam blowing.
 Construction and demolition activities.
 Air craft and rail movement
 Urbanization , market, crowd, loud speakers.
 Loud speakers, plumbing, boilers, generators,
air conditioners, fans, and vacuum cleaners
add to the existing noise pollution
NOISE STANDARD AND THRESHOLD
 Noise standard are specified by central
pollution control board under Noise pollution
control Act, 2000, Govt. of India.
Category of Day time limit Night time limit
area In dB(A) In dB(A)

Industrial 75 70

Commercial 65 55

Residential 55 45

Silence zone 50 40
NOISE FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES

Sources of Noise Sound level in dB(A)

Jet and Air craft 120-140
Rock music 100-110
Average street traffic 80-90
Commercial shop and office 60-70
Speech 55-60
Library 40-50
Bed room 10-20
HEALTH EFFECTS
 Noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological health.
 Hearing damage above 75 dB
 Single sound above 140 dB causes permanent hearing damage.
 Repeated exposure to high noise causes permanent hearing
damage.
 High blood pressure, stress related illness, sleep disruption, hearing
loss, and productivity loss are the problems related to noise
pollution.
 It can also cause memory loss, severe depression, and panic attacks.
 Interference in discussion, meeting, work interference and reduce
performance.
 High noise affects animal movements
 High noise may cause crack in buildings
NOISE POLLUTION CONTROL
 .A) Source control Measures
 a) Reduction of Impact forces
 By reducing weight, size and height of fall providing shock
absorbing material, using non-metallic( Plastic/ fibre) type of
material.
 Use of small impact forces for long duration and smoothing out
accelerating / moving parts.
 b) Reduction of speed and Pressure
 Use of large diameter low speed rotating equipments
 Use of squirrel cage type of fans
 Low speed air blowers in ventilation system
 c) Reduction of frictional resistance is achieved
 Proper alignment of rotating parts
 Polishing, sliding and smoothing of moving parts
 Balancing of rotating parts
 Use of Lubrication

 Flow streamlining

 Low fluid speed

 Smooth boundary surfaces

 Reduction of radiating area

 Reduction of noise leakage especially steam leakage

 Isolate and dampen vibrating elements with the use of

silencers
 B) Noise Control in Transmission Path
 Separation reduces the effect of sound by increasing

distance between source and receiver

 Use of sound absorbing materials like acoustical tile,

carpets on transmission paths like walls, floors ceiling

etc.
 Acoustical lining along the noise path

 Use of barriers panels, screen and deflectors

 providing enclosures
 C) Noise Control at Receiver end
 Alteration of work schedule

 Ear protection measures

 Providing molded and earplugs cup type protections and

ear muffs.
SOLUTIONS FOR NOISE
POLLUTION
 Community development or urban management should
be done with long-term planning, along with an aim to
reduce noise pollution.

 Social awareness programs should be taken up to educate

the public about the causes and effects of noise pollution.
