BOOTING

TYPES BOOTING
• Cold booting
• Warm booting
COLD BOOTING & WARM BOOTING
Refers to starting the computer from an off
state.
Refers to restarting the computer.
Reasons for warm booting include;
 Installation of a new software that prompts a
restart to effect functionality
 Freezing of the system
 System triggered update that demands a
restart of the computer.
STAGES/PHASES OF BOOTING
• Power On Self Test (POST) (during this stage
the computer checks for efficient functionality of its
basic hardware such as the CPU, RAM, HDD etc.)
• Power On Reset (POR) (here the computer is
simply restarted)
• Loading phase (the computers gets the windows
operating system loaded on the RAM and hence the
computer is set ready for use.)

What is the desktop screen?
• The desktop is the initial screen that
displays shortly after the loading phase of
booting.
• It sets the computer ready for use and
interaction by the user.
FEATURES OF THE DESKTOP
SCREEN
• Icons-are graphical small images that
represent specific programs/applications in the
computer. E.g.

• Cursor-the cursor is a pointer that helps a


user to navigate and make choices amidst
options.

• Taskbar-this is a bottom bar on the desktop


screen where all the actively running programs
are displayed
FEATURES OF THE DESKTOP

• Start button-is a button that triggers the start
menu when clicked on.

• Status icons/ Notification area.-shows
the status or presence and absence of certain
services such as network, protection, battery etc.

WINDOW
• What is window?
• A window is a display of an open computer
program e.g.

How to do the following;
• manipulate the taskbar (i.e. change the
location, hide and unhide).
• Change the screen wallpaper, screen saver,
resolution etc.
• Create a folder, rename, check properties etc..
• Copy, cut and paste.
• Change sizes, hide and unhide, move icons on
the desktop screen.

• All formulars in Ms Excel Must Start with an
equal sign (=)
• Each cell strictly contain one unit of data.
• All cells are unit

No spacing in the formula.
Number of open brackets should be equal
to the number of closing brackets.
Remarks should put in double cots.
