The document outlines a project to develop a real-time sign language recognition system aimed at improving communication for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. It will utilize video input to detect hand gestures, converting them into text and spoken output, thereby enhancing accessibility. The project focuses on Indian Sign Language (ISL) and aims to foster inclusivity in various environments such as education and public services.

ABSTRACT
 Communication is essential for human interaction, yet individuals with hearing and speech
impairments face difficulties expressing themselves. This often leads to social exclusion and
restricted access to education, jobs, and public services..

 To solve this problem, this project develops a real-time sign language recognition system. Using
video input, the system will detect hand gestures and convert them into meaningful text.
Additionally, it will generate spoken output to enhance accessibility for non-signers.

 Designed as an accessible desktop application, this solution will help sign language users interact
more effectively with non-signers, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in everyday communication.
LITERATURE SURVEY

 Traditional image processing techniques used for static sign

recognition

 Feature extraction based on hand shape, colour, and motion

 Effective in controlled environments with stable lighting

 CNNs used for static hand gesture classification

 ASL recognition achieved high accuracy with deep learning

 Limited research on Indian Sign Language (ISL)

SCOPE OF PROJECT

• Ensures better inclusivity for individuals with hearing and speech impairments.
• Assists students and teachers in learning and teaching ISL through interactive demonstrations and real-time
feedback.
• Helps government offices, hospitals, and customer service centers interact with sign language users without a
human interpreter.
• Focuses on real-time ISL recognition in a desktop environment.
• Aims to bridge the communication gap and foster a more inclusive society.
