Mirrors and
Reflection of
light
Mirrors
It is any surface that is smooth
enough to produce a regular
reflection

Can be classified as
-Plane
-Spherical

2 Types of Spherical Mirrors

-Concave (Real or Virtual)
-Convex (Virtual images)
Plane mirror
Plane mirror Is the one with a flat
surface.

The ordinary mirror you have at

home where you see the exact
image of yourself is a plane
mirror.

Plane mirrors are also used by

architects or interior designers to
make a room appear bigger.
Mirrors
A Spherical mirror has a
reflecting surfaces taken from
the surface of a sphere. It may
be a concave or convex.
Concave
1. A concave mirror curves
inward in the direction of
incident ray
2. Shaving mirrors, makeup
mirrors, and dentist's mirror
are concave mirrors.
3. Also known as converging
mirror.
4. Forms real or virtual
images
Concave
These mirrors are generally
used in everyday life with a
pretty small curvature, so
that you are always using it in
its "magnification" area and
you observe an enlarged
image. This kind of mirror is
used whenever you want to
make an image larger!
Makeup mirrors and dental
mirrors are concave mirrors.
Convex
1. A concave mirror bulges
outward to the incident rays.
2. Shiny christmas ball, The
rearview mirrors of cars, and
the dome mirrors in
supermarkets are convex
mirrors.
3. Also known as diverging
mirror.
4. Forms virtual images
Convex
A convex mirror bends light as it
reflects the light, and the farther
away a point is from the center,
the more the light is bent. As a
result, an image formed in a
convex mirror is smaller than an
image in a plane (flat) mirror.
Because the image is smaller,
more image can fit onto the
mirror, so a convex mirror
provides for a larger field of view
than a plane mirror. This is why
they are useful. They are used
whenever a mirror with a large
field of view is needed.
