Lesson-2Environmental Science Presentation

Environmental Science is the interdisciplinary study of interactions between physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment, addressing critical issues such as pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. It emphasizes the importance of balancing human activities with the natural world to ensure sustainable resource management. The document highlights major environmental challenges, including clean water scarcity, food supply issues, energy crises, climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss, and calls for scientific research, policy changes, and individual actions for a sustainable future.

“The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship.

We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by
future generations.” —John Paul II
What Is Environmental Science?
Introduction
• - Humans inhabit both the natural world
(plants, animals, air, water) and the social
world (science, technology, and political
systems).
• - Balancing these worlds creates tensions,
especially with growing human influence on
the environment.
• - Environmental Science helps us understand
and address these challenges.
Figure 1 Many kinds of knowledge contribute to solutions in environmental science. A few examples are shown.
Definition of Environmental Science
• - Environment: Conditions that surround an
organism or community.
• - Environmental Science: The systematic study
of the interactions between physical,
chemical, and biological components of the
environment.
• - Highly interdisciplinary, integrating natural
and social sciences.
Importance of Environmental Science
• - Helps us understand ecosystems and human
impact.
• - Aids in sustainable resource management.
• - Addresses critical environmental issues such
as pollution, climate change, and biodiversity
loss.
Environmental science is integrative.

We inhabit both a natural world of biological

diversity and physical processes and a human
environment of ideas and practices.
Environmental science involves both these
natural and human worlds.
Environmental Science as a Global Field
• - Our dependence on global resources: oil
from Venezuela, electronics from China.
• - Understanding regional and global
environmental systems is crucial for effective
solutions.
Environmental science helps us
understand our remarkable planet.
• Imagine that you are an astronaut returning to
the earth after a trip to the moon or Mars.
• What a relief it would be, after the silent void
of outer space, to return to this beautiful,
bountiful planet.
Current Environmental Conditions
• - Earth supports diverse life with self-
sustaining ecosystems.
• - However, human activities have led to
serious environmental challenges.
Major Environmental Issues
1. Clean Water Scarcity
- 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.
- Pollution and lack of sanitation cause millions of deaths annually.
- Water shortages projected to worsen by 2025.

2. Food Supply Challenges

- Agriculture struggles with soil degradation and unsustainable farming.
- Can food production be maintained without harming the environment?

3. Energy Crisis
- Fossil fuels provide 80% of energy but cause pollution and geopolitical
tensions.
- Renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal) offers cleaner alternatives.
Climate Change
• - Causes: Fossil fuel combustion,
deforestation, industrial activity.
• - Effects:
• - Rising temperatures and extreme weather.
• - Melting glaciers and rising sea levels.
• - Habitat destruction and species
endangerment.
Air Pollution
• - Over 2 billion metric tons of air pollutants
released annually.
• - Contributes to respiratory diseases, climate
change, and environmental degradation.
Biodiversity Loss
• - Habitat destruction, pollution, and invasive
species lead to mass extinctions.
• - Over 800 species have gone extinct in the
past century, and 10,000+ are threatened.
Conclusion
• - Environmental Science helps us protect and
sustain our planet.
• - The future depends on scientific research,
policy changes, and global cooperation.
• - Individual actions matter: conservation,
reducing waste, and advocating for
sustainable practices.
