Lab Report

The lab report investigates how different liquids affect the melting rate of ice cubes, with soda expected to melt ice the fastest due to its carbonation. The experiment involved measuring the melting of ice cubes in milk, water, and soda, with results showing soda melted the ice the quickest. The hypothesis was confirmed, and suggestions for improving the experiment included conducting more trials for greater accuracy.

SCIENTIFIC
QUESTION
• How does the different liquids
affect the melting of an ice
cube?
VARIABLES
• INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
I will change the liquids; I will use different
liquids for each ice cube.

• DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
I will measure the experiment with a
chronometer to see what ice cube will melt
faster.

• CONTROLLED VARIABLE:
I will keep the same is the amount of ice cubes,
the ml for each liquid, the same room, and do
the experiment at the same time.
HYPOTHESIS
• I think that the liquid that will
melt the ice cube faster is the
soda, because is the liquid that
is different than the other
ones, because the milk is very
similar to de normal water,
with the same volumen, and
the soda it have gas so is
different and maybe melt the
ice faster.
Procedure : Step-by-step list of what
I will do
• -First, I will calculate the milliliters (ml) of water that I will put in the ice cube mold to -Then, I will put 5 minutes in the
ensure that each cube has the same amount and temperature.

• -Then, I will take four bowls and pour the different liquids into each bowl, measuring the
chronometer
same amount for each liquid and been sure that they are all at the same temperature.

• -Once the ice cubes are frozen, I will take them out of the freezer at the same time to make
-When the 5 minutes have passed, I
sure they are all at the same temperature.
will ask for help to take out the ice
• -After that, I will place the ice cubes in the bowls. I will ask for help to put the ice cubes in
at the same time so that no ice cube melts longer than the others. cubes at the same time. I will then
• -Then, I will set a timer for 5 minutes.
measure the remaining liquid in each
bowl.

- With the answer that I have I will

subtract it by 200, that is the
measurement of the liquid, so I can
know how many ml had melted.

- I can do it with the calculator if you

want to do it faster.
Materials : Specific list of what I
need, including quantities
• Mold to do ice cubes.

• A jar with the measurements (ml, l, cl)

• 3 bowls

• 200 ml of milk

• 200 ml of water

• 200 ml of Fanta

• Chronometer

• Calculator (if you need to subtract the ml,

but you can do it mentally)

• Thermometer
RAW DATA (how many ml had melted)

MILK WATER SODA (FANTA)

TRY 1 2ML 20ML 24ML
TRY 2 4ML 19ML 26ML
AVERAGE 3ML 19,5ML 25ML

In this table we can see that I did it 2 times, so

then I can calculate the average, the first try with
the water it melted 2ml, but at the second try it
give me 4ml so I calculate the average that I got
3ml, with the water went better than the milk, in
the first try I got 20ml, and then 19ml so I
calculate the average, and it gave me 19.5, then
the last liquid, Fanta, it gave me the highest result,
in the first try I got 24ml, and with the second try I
got 26ml so I calculate the average that it gave me
25ml.
Data Processing : Write
the formulas you use, and
show a few examples

• I subtract the answer that I get after

puting the ice in the liquids for 2 minutes
with 200 that is the measerment of the
liquid that I used, and then I did it
another time and I did the average by
adding teh 2 answers that I get and then
divided by 2.

• EXAMPLE :

• 224 ml - 200ml = 24 ml
• 226 ml- 200 ml = 26ml
26+24:2= 25ml

Milk Water Soda

TRY 1(mL) TRY 2(mL)

Patterns : Explain what your data
using words like increase or decrease

In the table we can see that with the milk the ice cube melted very
slowly 3 ml, that it’s not too much. Then with the water I can see that it
melted very fast in 2 minutes, it melted 19.5, the diference form the milk
and the wáter is 16,5 that it’s a lot. With the Fanta the ice melted very
but very fast 25ml, with the milk a 22ml of diference, and with the water
5,5ml of diference.
Evaluating the
hypothesis
• My hypothesis was correct, the
soda melt the ice faster, so that
it’s means that the prediction
that I did it was correct, also a
very interesting thing is that
when I put the ice in the soda It
started making more bubbles, it
seemed like something was
burning, it sounded like putting
meat in a frying pan with oil
and cooking it.
Evaluating the method
• I believe that my method is correct and also
my table, because I take the ice cubes at
the same time, I asked two more people to
take it out so the data will be correct, and
also with the temperature I took an
thermometer to see that all the liquids have
the same temperatura, and with the ice
cubes to be the same amount first I put
water in a jar to calculate how many ml I
need to put in the mold of ice cubes.
Suggesting
improvoments
• I think that I do it good, but
maybe to be more accurate I
can do the expermient 3 times
and then calculate the
average, but I think that 2 it’s
okay. However I think that for
the first time I did it very well,
but there are things that for
the next time I can do it much
better.
Conclusion
• In conclusion, this experiment
it was to know what liquid melt
an ice cube faster, in my
opinion I think that doing this
experiment can help you a lot
for the next time that you want
to melt an ice cube faster, you
can use Fanta, and also you
know that do not use milk if
you want to melt an ice cube
fast.
