Problems On Functions

The document outlines learning objectives related to functions, including representing situations as functions and applying them to real-life problems. It includes various activities and scenarios for students to analyze and solve, such as calculating transportation fares and profits from sales. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of functions in both business and geometry.

Problems on Functions

Learning Objectives:
1. represent situations as functions and evaluate functions
to determine the required quantity;
2. apply concepts learned in solving real -life problems
involving functions; and
3. appreciate the importance of real-life problems involving
functions.
ACTIVATION
Activity 1 FUNCTION INVESTIGATOR

 Directions: Determine whether each statement is True or False.

1. If a function is represented by a set of ordered pairs, then, no two pairs

have the same first element.
2. The relation y = 2x is NOT a function.
3. A function is a rule of correspondence between two non – empty sets,
such that to each element in the domain, there corresponds a unique
element in the range.
4. The equation y= is NOT a function.
5. An element of the range of a function may be used more than once.
ACTIVITY
2Directions: Read and analyze the given situations that make use of functions,
then write a function rule.
1. The cost of buying sandwich ( x ), if a sandwich cost ₱15.00.

2. A tricycle passenger pays ₱10.00 for the first 6 km, and an

additional ₱5.00 for every succeeding distance d in kilometer.

3. The total income I of a gardener as a function of the number

n of days earning ₱ 350.00 per day.
Demonstration

In solving problems involving functions, George Polya’s

4-step rule can facilitate its solution. First, EXPLORE the
problem carefully and choose a variable for an unknown
quantity. Then PLAN the solution. Write equations (thought
processes) that describe the relationships. Next, SOLVE the
equations and other number relations, determine the required
quantities, and answer the questions in the problem. Finally,
CHECK the solution using other approaches and examine the
appropriateness of the answers.
Activity 1 MOTORCYCLE OR TRICYCLE?
Directions: Please read and analyze the scenario below then answer
the questions that follow.

Stephen, a senior high school student travels from home to

school, a distance of 11 kilometers. He has two transportation
options: a motorcycle and a tricycle. When using a motorcycle,
the initial fare is ₱10.00 for the first 4 kilometers, with an
additional charge of 1.00 for each extra kilometer. On the other
hand, when opting for a tricycle, the initial fare is ₱10.00 for the
first 5 kilometers, followed by a charge of ₱0.75 for each
additional kilometer.
Guide Questions:
1. If you are Stephen and decided to ride a motorcycle, how much will be
your fare?
Hint: You may use the table above to compute the fare.

2. What is the function rule of the situation above?

3. If you decide to ride a tricycle, how much will be your fare?

4. If you are Stephen which between the two modes of transportation

will you choose? Why?
Activity 2
FUNCTION IN BUSINESS
The Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) officers are trying to raise
funds by selling school ID sling to students. The original price of each sling is
₱10.00 and being sold at ₱20.00 . The SSLG treasurer has already sold out
₱25,200.00 as sales.

a. Find the profit function F(x) where x represents the number of ID sling sold.

Hint: Profit = Total Revenue – Total Cost

Total Revenue = Price per unit x quantity sold
Total Cost = Total original cost + fixed cost

b. If 1750 sling were sold, how much is the total profit?

c. How many ID sling will be sold to have a profit of ₱20,000.00?

APPLICATION
Activity 1 FUNCTION ODYSSEY
Directions: Do as indicated. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. A company sells a product for ₱250.00 each. Write a function that represents
the total revenue, R, based on the number of products sold, x.
2. A train is travelling at a constant speed of 80 mph. Write a function that
represents the distance, D, the train has traveled after x hours.
3. The population of a town, P, is increasing at a rate of 3% per year. What is the
population after a year, based on an initial population of 15,000.
4. A rectangular garden has a width of 25 ft and a length that is 5 ft longer than
the width. Find the area of the garden.
INTEGRATION
Activity 1: FUNCTION IN GEOMETRY AND PARABOLA

1. Alfred has 200 m of fencing material. He wishes to fence off an area in the shape
of a rectangle. What should be the dimensions of the area if the enclosed space is
to be as large as possible? What is the largest area? Did the problem make you
realize the importance of functions in real life situations?
Hint: A= LW, P= 2L + 2W
2. A rocket is launched vertically from the ground. The height of the rocket above
the ground is modeled by the function h(t) = - 3t2+ 30t +8 meters, where t is the
time in seconds since the launch. Find the time it takes for the rocket to reach its
maximum velocity.
