Note Taking

Note taking is a crucial skill for university students, aiding in the retention of lecture material and providing a reference for future assessments. Effective note taking methods include the Cornell Method, Outlining Method, Mapping Method, Charting Method, and Sentence Method, each serving different purposes in organizing information. Additionally, strong study skills such as breaking study sessions into chunks, creating a dedicated study area, and using mnemonics can enhance academic success.

2 Note taking and study

skills
Note taking is an essential learning skill for university
students to implement during and outside of class time.
The notes recorded during a class lecture should be
compiled of the important facts or ideas presented by
the lecturer. They can also help you remember
information from individual, group or client meetings, in
addition to lectures and discussions. Students should
devote a considerable amount of time reviewing
information discussed during classroom lectures.
Why should you take notes?
• The lecturer may be presenting supplemental material not
found with students.
• Gives written record which can be refered to at a later date
• the information presented may be used for future
assessments( e.g. exams).
• taking notes during class increases the retention of the
material.
What do someone should do before
taking note?
• try to avoid potential distractions. For example, turn off
notifications and make sure to put away phone or turn it
off before the lecture.
• Evaluate the purpose of notes. This can offer increased
clarity and allow to better discern what types of
information to include in the notes.
• Write Title, date, author and objective before starting to
take note.
How can be the note taking
done?
• While listening to the lecture, the note taking can be done effectively
with different methods. Notes are a summary of what you are reading
or listening to. It isn’t possible to write down everything so you
should only make notes on the key information: the main points and
the important details.
The common note taking methods Includes
the following
• The Cornell Method can be done by dividing the note taking paper in to three differently used and
sized sections. This method is an easy format for pulling out major concept and ideas. And also saves
time and effort.
• The Outlining Method except for class like math, this method is better method of taking notes. It uses
placing the main topic of a title at the most left and bulleting the details under it by making some
space from the left margin. The distance from the main point will be based on their importance. It is
suitable for both inductive or deductive form of flow between points.
• The Mapping Method is a way in which we represent linkage of ideas using graphical or branched
chains. It is fruitful in complicated lectures. By using this way of note-taking one can visualize main
points graphically.
• The Charting Method this method uses construction of charts and tables in which the headings or
titles of the lecture are put in the head row. It reduces confusion between ideas and easier comparison
study.
• The Sentence Method is simply writing short sentences. It is advantageous on that it can contain more
information and ideas in it.
some common things you have to
do during note
• Since you have to take notes fast, you should use
abbreviations and symbols to represent common languages.
And(&), ditto("), is the same as(=), nota bene(NB), so
on(etc...) are commonly used.
• If you miss anything, consider asking the speaker to repeat
themselves or at the end ask a peer or colleague about what
you missed.
Study skills
• Study skills are essential tools for any student who wants to
succeed academically. They refer to a range of techniques
and strategies that help students manage their time
effectively, improve their memory and concentration, and
retain information more efficiently. By using these 7 strong
study skills below, students can enhance their learning
experience, and achieve better results.
The 7 strong study skill
include:
1. Break the study into chunk session
2. Create a dedicated study area
3. Study actively
4. Take more effective notes
5. Teach what you learn
6. Use your textbooks correctly
7. Use mnemonics for using facts
