What is probability?
• Probability is the chance that
something will happen.
• Eg1: Ms Vy doesn’t look well today, it is likely that
she will be absent tomorrow.
• Eg2: The weather is very nice today, it is very
unlikely that it will be raining today.
• Eg3: My aunt is pregnant, she likes to have a
baby boy, but it is a 50-50 chance (even chance).

Equally likely outcomes

Objectives:

1. LA: By the end of the lesson all students will know the definition
of events, outcome, total possible outcomes, equally likely outcome.
2. MA: By the end of the lesson most students will be able to find the
probability of a simple equally likely outcomes event.
3. HA: By the end of the lesson some students will be able to find the
probability of events for more complex outcomes.
A Fair Coin

Heads and tails are

equally likely.

A Fair Die
All sides are
equally likely.

Counters
Each counter is
equally likely.
Event is an activity. Eg: Throwing a dice or flipping a coin.
Total possible outcomes: Total results from an event. Eg The
total possible outcomes of throwing a dice is six or the total
outcomes from flipping a coin is 2.
Outcome: is a result of an event. Eg: Head is an outcome of
throwing a coin or 5 is an outcome of throwing a dice.
Equally likely outcomes: a set of outcomes that has equal
value of probability. Eg: When throwing a dice, numbers
1,2,3,4,5,6 are all equally likely outcomes.
Random: when the outcomes vary and are often equally likely.
Eg the card is chosen at random, it means the cards have the
same chance of being selected.
Coins
Different sized coins
are not equally likely.

The Weather

The weather from

day-to-day is not
equally likely.
Activity 1
• Discuss in your group, give one examples
of equally likely outcome event, and
answer these questions:
– What is the total possible outcomes?
– List all the outcomes.
• You have 3 minutes for discussion and
write down the answer on the paper.

3. HA: By the end of the lesson some students will be able to find the

In equally likely event, the probability
all outcomes must be equally likely.
Eg1: The probability of getting number
1,2,3,4,5, or 6 from throwing a fair dice is
1/6.
Eg2:The probability of getting a head or a
tail when throwing a coin is ½.
