PREPARING AUDIO-VISUAL
PRESENTATION
Audio- visual (AV) aids,
refer to devices with both a
sound and a visual
component which are for
presentation and
dissemination of knowledge.
17th century – visual aids was
introduced when John Amos
Comenius, a Bohemian
educator, had pictures as
teaching aids in his book ‘Orbis
Sensualium Pictus’ (Pictures of
the Sensual World) illustrated
with 150 drawings of everyday
life.
19 century – serious
th
development was made for the
effective use of audio-visual aids
in teaching learning lessons.
1929- sound motion films were
used in classrooms for teaching
purposes.
Audio-visual aids proved to be very
beneficial in almost all the field of
knowledge. They appeal to senses,
especially hearing and looking.
* Thus, it is believed that human
senses are doorways to acquire
knowledge, therefore when
something appeals to senses,
curiosity increases which leads to
clear and concrete understanding
of the concept.

Advantages of Having Audio-
Visuals
1. Catch the audience attention and
help to get involved into the learning
process without problem. Help
present the material in an attractive
way so that it is more meaningful for
everyone to process the subject.
Advantages of Having Audio-
Visuals
2. Help audience better
understand the intended
message or topic. The visual aids
can help emphasize the
important points. The message
becomes immediately apparent.
Advantages of Having Audio-
Visuals
3. Make the audience remember
the concept for longer period of
time. It makes the presentation
more memorable and thus,
increase the chances that what
the speaker said will be
remembered.
Advantages of Having Audio-
Visuals
4. Make the class more
interesting, dynamic and effective.
The colorful and animated visuals
can trigger the imagination of the
audience and heighten their
interest in the subject matter.
5. Help students to experience
things virtually or vicariously.
6. Provide opportunities for
effective communication between
the speaker and his audience.
7. Help in maintaining discipline in
the class since all the students’
attention is focused in learning.
Guidelines for Using Visual
Aids
1. Avoid too much information on
any single visual.
2. Use boldface type in a font size
that can be easily read.
3. Use sans serif type because it
produces a sharper image for
slides and transparencies.
Guidelines for Using Visual
Aids
4. Limit the fonts you use to two
per visual.
5. Avoid all caps.
6. Use a type-size and font- that
contrasts distinctly with the
background.
Guidelines for Using Visual
Aids
7. Avoid visuals that use too many
colors – more that four on any one aid.
8. In preparing slides or transparencies
for video conferencing, use the plain
background and a color- such as yellow
or light green- and a black text. Color
can enhance a visual but it can also
reduce the effectiveness of the message.
Guidelines for Using Visual Aids
9. Templates available in programs
such as PowerPoint are tempting but
they may not be readable when text
is placed on them.
10. Avoid making your audience
study your aids. If they are busy
trying to decipher your visual aid,
they will not be listening to you.
Guidelines for Using Visual Aids
11. Bar graphs, circle graphs, simple
diagrams, pictures, and lists are standard
types of visual aids. Whatever aid you decide
to use, limit the aid to only the concept,
data, or point you are trying to make. Use
bar graphs, line graphs, or circle graphs
rather than tables, particularly if the table
has more than one column. Tables are
harder to interpret than a graphic
Guidelines for Using Visual Aids
12. Computer graphics and programs
such as Harvard Graphics,
PowerPoint, and Excel in combination
with color printers and slide
projection equipment provide the
opportunity to experiment with
graphic design. Design visual aids that
are visually pleasing as well as clear.
Guidelines for Using Visual Aids
13. Use technology whatever possible.
Some websites have visuals that you can
use for presentations about the topic.
14. Technology allows speakers to
download graphs, drawings, and figures
from the worldwide web. The web is one
of the richest, newest, most colorful
sources of visual aids.
Guidelines for Using Visual Aids
15. Keep the time limit for your
presentation in mind, about 10 to 15
slides are adequate for short
presentations, equivalent to 15
minutes.
Web-based Presentations

4. putting information in unexpected
places on the pages.
5. Not making links obvious and clear.

Web-based Presentations
Ten (10) common mistakes in presenting information on the web:
8. Using color combinations for text
that many users cannot read.
9. Using bad forms.
10. Hiding (or not providing)
features that could help users.
Making an Effective Web-based
Presentation
Guidelines to ensure your presentation
is memorable and conveys the message
you want:
1. Keep it short and simple. – use
your presentation slides to highlight
key messages and topics using as little
text as possible.
Making an Effective Web-based
Presentation
2. Style tastefully. - choose
backgrounds that provide sufficient
contrast and do not interfere with
text. Maintain a consistent color
palette and stick to colors that are
not hard on the eyes.
Making an Effective Web-based
Presentation
3. Use a bold typography and proper
hierarchy. – your presentation must be
readable on a variety of devices. Use a
small number of complimentary fonts
for their weight and style, and use
effects such as gradients or shadows to
help them apart from the background.
Making an Effective Web-based
Presentation
4. Illustrate your point. – charts,
infographics, photography and art
can demonstrate what you don’t have
room to say with text, or add
emphasis to the topic. Don’t be afraid
to inject a little humor here and there
if appropriate to your subject.
Making an Effective Web-based
Presentation
5. Give your reader control. – always
allow your readers to move between
slides or pause your presentation. Slide
show style solutions usually include a
set of controls- build similar controls
into your HTML presentations or any
format that does not use as embedded
player.
