Rejecting Region 085931

The document explains the differences between two-tailed and one-tailed tests in hypothesis testing. A two-tailed test is used when the alternative hypothesis is two-sided, while a one-tailed test is used when the hypothesis assumes a specific direction (less than or greater than). It also provides examples and explains concepts like rejection region, non-rejection region, and critical values in the context of testing hypotheses about average social media usage.

Two- Tailed Test vs.

One Tailed Test

Two- Tailed
-When the alternative hypothesis is two-sided like

One-tailed test
- When the given statistic hypothesis assumes a less
than or greater than value.
Two-tailed test

One- tailed test

Example: The school registrar believes that the average number
of enrollees this school year is not same as the previous school
year.
let be the average number of enrollees last year.
If use two-tailed test.

However, if the school register believes that the average number of enrollees
this school year is less than the previous school year, then you will have:
On the other hand, if the school registrar believes that the
average number of enrollees this school year is greater than the
previous school year, then you will have:
Rejection region (critical region) – is the set of all values of the
test statistics that causes us to reject the null hypothesis.

Non-rejection region (acceptance region)- is the set of all

values of the test statistics that causes us to fail to reject the
null hypothesis

Critical value- is a point on the test distribution that is

compared to the test statistic to determine if the null
hypothesis would be rejected.
One- tailed test or directional
test, the critical region is at
left side of the acceptance
region.

Two- tailed test or non-

directional test the critical
region is at the left and right
side of the acceptance
region.
Commonly used levels of significance and its
corresponding critical value.
Example 1: According to a survey, the average daily usage
of social media worldwide of global internet users amount
to 142 minutes per day. Sofia conducts her own survey
among her 10 friends to find out if their time spent on
social media is significantly higher than the global survey.

Claim A: The average daily usage of social media of her

friends is the same as the global average usage.
Claim B. The average daily usage of social media of her
friends is higher than the global average usage.
