Fundamentals of Motion

Grade 7 Science Lesson

What is Motion?
• • Motion is the change in position of an object
over time.
• • It is described in terms of distance,
displacement, speed, velocity, and
acceleration.
• • Motion occurs everywhere: in living beings,
machines, planets, and more.
Motion in Other Scientific Domains
• • Physics: Newton’s Laws describe motion.
• • Biology: Blood moves through veins, muscles
contract.
• • Astronomy: Planets orbit the Sun.
• • Everyday life: Vehicles, sports, walking, etc.
Distance vs Displacement
• • Distance: Total path traveled (scalar
quantity).
• • Displacement: Shortest straight-line distance
from start to end (vector quantity).
• • Example: If a person walks 10m forward and
then 10m back, the distance is 20m, but
displacement is 0m.
Speed vs Velocity
• • Speed: How fast an object moves
(distance/time, scalar quantity).
• • Velocity: Speed with direction (vector
quantity).
• • Formula: Speed = Distance ÷ Time, Velocity =
Displacement ÷ Time.
Solving Motion Problems
• Example:
• A car travels 100m in 5 seconds. What is its
speed?
• Solution:
• Speed = Distance ÷ Time = 100m ÷ 5s = 20
m/s.
Think and Answer!
• 1. If a bike moves 50m north, then 50m south,
what is the displacement?
• 2. A train covers 200 km in 4 hours. What is its
speed?
• 3. Give an example of motion in biology.
Solving Motion Problems with Discussion
• Let's solve a problem together:

• **Problem:** A runner completes a 400m track in 50 seconds. What

is their speed?

• **Step-by-step Discussion:**
• 1. What is given? (Distance = 400m, Time = 50s)
• 2. What formula should we use? (Speed = Distance ÷ Time)
• 3. Solve: Speed = 400m ÷ 50s = 8 m/s
• 4. What does this tell us? (Runner moves at 8 meters per second.)
• 5. How does this relate to real-life motion (e.g., running a race,
vehicle speed)?
