WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?
comes from a latin word
“communicare” which means to share .

Communication is generally defined


as the exchange of thoughts, ideas,
concepts, and views between or among
two or more people, various contexts
come into play.

Context – the circumstance or


environment in which communication
takes place.

COMMUNICATION

ACCORDING TO MODE

VERBAL

NON-VERBAL

VISUAL
VERBAL COMMUNICATION

This involves the use of spoken


word to convey information, and can
take place the form of face-to-face
conversations, telephone calls, or
public speeches.
NON-VERBAL
COMMUNICATION
This involves the use of non-verbal
cues, such as, body language,
facial expressions, to convey information.

- Non-verbal communication can be very


powerful and can often convey emotions or
meaning more effectively than words.
VISUAL COMMUNICATION
Type of communication that uses visuals to
convey information and/or messages.

is all about transmitting information using


imagery.

Examples: signs, symbols, imagery, maps,


charts, diagrams, pictograms, photos, drawings
or illustrations, and even various forms of
electronic communication.
WHY IS VISUAL
COMMUNICATION IMPORTANT?
1. INCREASES RETENTION – People remember more of
what they see compared to what they hear and
recall.
2. UNIVERSALLY UNDERSTOOD – we can simplify
complicated messages in a way that enables
anyone to understand, regardless of their
language and age.

3. EASILY RECOGNIZABLE – Companies create logos


that are eye catching and memorable so the person
can recognize them wherever they are.

The Latin prefix “intra-” means


within or inside

Intrapersonal
communication means talking
to oneself. It is an activity
that takes place in our mind;
wherein a person involved in
conversation with
himself/herself. The sender
and the receiver are the same
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

The Latin prefix “inter-”


means between, among, and
together.

This communication occurs


both verbally- with words- and
non verbally, encompassing
facial expressions, gestures,
body language, and tone of
voice.
EXTENDED COMMUNICATION

Extended communication
involves the use of electronic media.
With the use of electronic media
messages are transmitted quickly.

It is the use of technology and


communication despite distance.
ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Refers to the communication that


takes place between people who are
working towards common goals within an
organization. It consists of the
interactions that takes place for the
purpose of working together towards
these goal or conducting business in
general.
TWO TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONAL
COMMUNICATION

1. FORMAL
2. INFORMAL
FORMAL STRUCTURE – allows
communication to take place via
designated channels of message flow
between positions in the organization .
This make use of four approaches:
1. Downward communication - upper to
lower positions.

2. Upward communication - is bottom-up in


which subordinates sends communication
to their superiors/bosses.
3. Horizontal communication- is a lateral
approach that takes place among people
belonging to same hierarchal level but
coming from different departments or units
to facilitate performance or tasks through
proper coordination.

4. Crosswise communication - is diagonal in


nature as employees from different units or
departments working at various levels
communicate with each other.
INFORMAL
COMMUNICATION

comes from unofficial channels


of message flow.
Also known as “grapevine”,
messages coming from the
different levels of the organization
are transmitted.

- It can take from a rumor or


gossip.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

It is communication
between or among
people having different
linguistic, religious,
ethnic, social, and
professional
backgrounds.
TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
ACCORDING TO PURPOSE AND STYLE
FORMAL COMMUNICATION
– employs formal
language delivered
orally or in written form.
Example: Lectures,
public talks/speeches,
research and project
proposals, reports, and
business letters.
INFORMAL COMMUNICATION
– It involves personal and ordinary
conversations with friends, family
members, or acquaintances about
anything under the sun.
Example: ordinary or everyday talks
and phone calls, or written as in the
case of e-mail messages, personal
notes, letters or text messages.

view about the statement below.

mastered its effective use can change their own
experience of the world and the world’s
experience of them. All behavior and feelings
find their original roots in some form of
communication.”
