Introduction to Cloud Computing

[Cloud Com·put·ing]

the practice of using a network of

remote servers hosted on the Internet
to store, manage, and process data,
rather than a local server or a personal
computer.

Prepared by: William Pourmajidi

Lecture: 4
Course Learning outcome
2. Analyze methods of Cloud Management Practices,
monitoring and delivery and hosting models

Course Learning objective

2.1 Cloud management practices
2.2 Cloud workload management

Cloud Management Practices
Cloud Management Practices

Cloud Management Practices does not start with the administration portion after
deployment;
it starts during the planning phase.

Understanding Cloud Management Practices

• Companies have private and public cloud

• Companies have multi-vendor public cloud
• Vendors are not nicely connected due to direct competition
• OpenStack's aim is to bring these vendors under one Data center
infrastructure management (DCIM)
Cloud Management Practices

Cloud Management Practices Platforms(CMPs)

Integrated interface for self-service provisioning of all cloud services

Understanding Cloud Management Practices

• VMs Lifecycle (initiation, management, deletion)

• Storage Lifecycle
• Clones/Images
• Billing and Metering
• Performance and workload monitoring and optimization
• Complete reporting and auditing features
• Root Cause analysis

Cloud Management Practices
Service Level Agreement (SLA)

The most important document that exists between the service provider and the
customer or user. It covers:

• The percentage of uptime for a service (e.g., 99.999%~5 min a year!)

• The amount of user traffic that can be served at one time
• The data rate and bandwidth limitations
• Performance and capacity of resources
• The schedule of notifications for events like planned maintenance and
outages
• Help desk response times and (Note: it’s very different than resolution
time)
• The scope of support (what’s included and what is not)

Planning the Documentation of the Network and IP

When preparing the network and IP documentation, you should consider all
communications occurring in and out of the network:

• Core Network: The core network provides an infrastructure for your cloud
• Access Network: Internal users and access to cloud resources.
• Edge Network: provides connectivity to external users from different
network types,
most commonly the Internet, WANs, backbones, and Virtual Private
Networks (VPNs)

Moreover, consider:

• Data flow
• Application-optimized traffic
Cloud Management Practices
Standardizing Configuration and Documentation
• For cloud servers, switches, infrastructure devices, homogeneity is extremely
important
• All servers, their specifications must be documented
• All network devices, equipment should be documented

Implementing Change Management Best Practices

• Consider sources of change

• Internal
• External
• Change requires “Request for Change” (RFC)
• Types of change
• Normal
• Standard ( evaluated in the past)
• Emergency change
• Change advisory board
• For more information visit change management:

Cloud Management Practices
Managing the Configuration
Configuration management is all about ensuring that IT assets are properly
configured

• Identify configuration items (CIs)

• Control and protect the integrity of all configuration items
• Maintain a complete and accurate configuration management system by
maintaining information on the states of all CIs
• Provide accurate and updated configuration information
• Each CI has a unique identifier
• If CIs are by any means changed, changes are kept in Change Management
Database Base (CMDB) and can be used as a restore-point

Capacity Management
Monitor trends and changes and plan capacity accordingly

Cloud Management Practices

Configuration Changes (Related to ITIL)

• To minimize the downtime, configuration management plays a vital role

• Improper configuration leads to performance issues
Cloud workload management

Scheduling Maintenance Window

• Identify most reliable maintenance plan

• Identify least disruptive maintenance plan
• Communicate/negotiate maintenance window with customer
• Review SLA to ensure you meet up-time clause
• If possible, use exact replica to test maintenance on a test environment as
opposed to the main environment
Cloud workload management

Managing Workloads Right on the Cloud

• “Success disaster” : when demand is high, but IT cannot keep up

• Intelligent Workload Management (IWM) can be used
• On AWS, we have Auto Scaling (Auto Scaling helps you maintain application
availability and allows you to scale your Amazon EC2 capacity up or down
automatically according to conditions you define)

Managing Risks

• Security Risks
• Internal or External Risks
