Recognize the elements of plot, setting,

CHARACTERIZATION
CHARACTERIZATION
 is the process by which the writer reveals the
personality of a character.
 DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION: telling the
viewers what a character is like.
 INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION: relies on the
reader to discover what the character is like. It
doesn’t use verbal descriptions of a character,
rather it relies on the behavior, speech and
appearance of the character.

Characters are the “actors” in the
story’s plot.
 Can be animals, people or whatever the
author chooses.
2 TYPES OF CHARACTER
Setting
5 Elements
1. Exposition/beginning
 It is the part of a story where
the writer builds the world, sets
the time frame, and introduces
characters to help the reader
understand when and where
things are taking place.
2. Rising action
 where the story begins to develop.
 Conflicts are introduced that
complicate the lives of the characters
and create suspense.
 These tensions can be a cause of
excitement or crisis as the characters
deal with the conflict put in front of
them.
3. Climax
 is when the tensions or actions
have reached their peak and
characters have reached a turning
point in the story. From this point
on, the reader is left to wonder
what will happen next and if the
tensions will be resolved.
4. Falling action
occurs once the conflict from
the onset of the story begins
to resolve itself.
5. Resolution
 it is the last element to take place.
The resolution is the conclusion of
the story, which can be happy,
tragic, or open for interpretation.
Regardless, a well-written conclusion
will make it clear that the story has
come to an end.

 It is generally
meant to make
people laugh.
Horror
 It aims to evoke viewers’
nightmares, fears, and
terrors of the unknown. Its
subgenres include zombie
horror and folk horror
Action
It has tremendous
impact, continuous
high energy, lots of
physical stunts and
activity. Some of
its subgenres are
war & military
action, spy &
espionage action
and martial arts
action.
Sci-fi
 Uses visionary, fictional science-based
depictions through fanciful imaginative settings.
Some of subgenres are space travel, time travel,
robot and monster films and alien invasion.
Sci-fi
Romance
The plot revolves
around the love of its
main characters such
as courtship, forbidden
love, or love triangles.
Its subgenres include
hiostoricaal romance,
romantic drama,
romantic comedy and
chick flick
Thriller
 Induces strong feelings of excitement, tension,
suspense and other similar emotions. Some of
its subgenres are conspiracy thriller, crime
thriller and spy thriller.
Drama
 This is a serious
presentation or stories with
settings real- life situations
that portray realistic
characters in conflict with
either themselves, others,
or forces of nature. Its
subgenres include political
drama, romantic drama,
and melodrama.s
Fantasy
A film genre that
most likely
overlaps with sci-fi
and other genres,
but it bases its
content on some

truth, fairytale
experiences and
mythical beings.
