The Descriptive Essay
• The descriptive essay is a genre
of essay that asks the student to
create a vivid picture of something
—object, person, place,
experience, emotion, situation, etc.
• The audience of your work should
feel that they have actually had the
experience

Features of the Descriptive Text
• It has two major aims – to identify and to
describe
• It SHOWS rather than tells
• It doesn’t lose sight of the dominant
impression (thesis or theme)
• It makes use of Sensory details (the 5 senses)
• It employs Imagery (simile, metaphor,
descriptive words, etc.) For example:
• Language is clear, precise and concise • The house was old
• It uses vocabulary exquisitely – adjectives,
adverbs and gerunds • The house frowned with a
• Usually uses the simple present tense wrinkled brow, and inside it

The Writing Process
1. Planning/Prewriting – What do you want to
describe and why? Brainstorm details associated
with the topic. Plan an outline into a logical
sequence. Write your thesis statement.
2. Drafting – Develop your outline into
paragraphs by showing the reader what’s in your
mind - involve all the senses.
3. Reviewing, modifying – read over your work;
have you given a complete picture; is your
description meaningful?
4. Edit and proofread – correct grammatical and
mechanical errors
5. Final drafting – Neatly present your work

Introduction - the introduction should
not constitute a lot of description; you
should give a brief overview – make an
impression
Body - Use topic sentences at the start
of every paragraph. After the topic
sentence, proceed with your
description (characteristics/qualities)
Conclusion - Your last parting shot
with the reader should be intriguing so
that they can leave thinking about your
description
