Activity: “Hugotin Mo Ako
The teacher will ask 5 volunteer students to pick a
piece of paper in the box containing “hugot lines”. This
hugot lines represents problems encountered by people
under the following categories: 1. Individuals 2. Groups
and Organizations 3. Community. (10 minutes).
Instructions:
• There should be 5 volunteers for the activity.
• One by one students will pick a piece of paper
containing hugot lines. These hugot lines represents
concerns of different group of individuals.
• The volunteer will read it loudly and the rest of the
class will guess who they think is being represented by
the hugot line.

Population
Different Types of Special Counseling population is composed of the
following:

PEOPLE WHO ABUSE DRUGS


In our society there are increasing
drug users. Drug abuse is not just
harmful to our physical health but our
mental health as well. It cannot denied
that drug addiction create more social
problems and contribute to social
disintegration. Consequently, more
youth victims cry for help and seek for
counselors’ attention.
PEOPLE WHO USE TOBACCO

Slowly our population


recognizes the bad effects of
tobacco to our health. Many
people will use and continue to
use tobacco even if it is deadly.
Users find difficult to stop
smoking. Smokers who desire to
quit tobacco were added to the
PEOPLE WHO ABUSE ALCOHOL

Alcoholism is seen as disease


and alcoholics find it difficult to
stop drinking on their own. This
requires help from a professional as
it requires appropriate treatment.
An equally important paradigm is to
look at alcoholism as a weakness of
self –control and self- discipline.
WOMEN

Even with the changing role of women in


society, men still predominantly control
purchasing and decision making powers. Most
men still have less participation in household
responsibilities and child care. In this case,
women’s advancement is constrained. What
complicates this situation is the women’s
perception about themselves and the society’s
expectation.

Counselors are responsible in helping


OLDER ADULTS
The aging population is increasingly
rising and demands more attention.
Retirees who are adjusting to life
outside work feel lost and ignored. Life
to them suddenly loses meaning. A
transition from a busy life to
retirement stage must be instituted.
This is a challenge to the
counseling profession. Other aging
issues that require attention of
counseling include loss of a partner,
PEOPLE WITH AIDS

Acquired Immune Deficiency


Syndrome (AIDS) has been labeled as
most feared disease due to its
incurability. Victims of this disease are
seek help to improve quality of life and
to handle their emotional stress and
low self-esteem.
Counseling approach requires
sensitivity and appreciation of the
intricacies of the disease. Counselors
VICTIMS OF ABUSE

This population represents victims of


domestic violence characterize by
spouse and child abuses. Spouse abuse
is often associated with drug abuse and
career disappointments. The abuse has
also become rampant and has caused
psychological damage to the victims.
The counselors are increasingly being
utilized to help the victims.
GAY MEN AND LESBIAN WOMEN

There is a growing number of gays


and lesbians that are coming out.
There are still sectors in the society,
including their own families that avoid
and discriminate them. They are
usually the victims of harassment,
violence, discrimination, and isolation.
Gays and lesbians, like other
sectors of the society, suffer from peer
denial, family clash, health

INDIVIDUALS
In the school setting, counseling is provided by the
Guidance and Counseling Department. In elementary, often
deal with pupils’ concerns, most of which are behavioral. On
the other hand, counseling services offered in high school
and college are primarily about career plan or relationship.
In the industry setting, counseling responds to the
concerns of employees or professionals. Difficulties in the
workplace are as varied as those in the school setting. A
few examples are family reasons, career-related concerns
and even financial difficulties that affect the workers
performance.
Group/ Organizations

The group clientele of counseling consists of people


who either share similar concerns or benefit from giving
support to one another. A program is prepared for these
groups to assist them in the difficulties they encounter.
These are some groups and organizations a
counselor reaches out to: 1. Students with academic
difficulties, honor students, students with career
uncertainties, children of OFW parents and single
parents, international students, students living in
dormitories or away from home and individuals with
socio-emotional concerns, victims of disasters and peer
facilitator.
COMMUNITY

Guidance counselors are also work in partnership


with other members of the school community such as
parents and school authorities.
In order to address students’ needs, collaborative
efforts between parents and counselors are being done
through conferences or meetings. Counselors meet with
parents of students who often demonstrate behavioral
problem.
School authorities and administrators like teachers,
department heads or principals are also counted as
clientele of guidance counselors.
APPLICATION: PRACTICAL RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Instructions:
The teacher will provide a need assessment
tool. This assessment tool will be used by the
students to address the needs and concerns
of the following respondents
• Grade 10 students
• Grade 11 students
• Grade 12 students
• Teaching Personnel
• Non- teaching Personnel

1. After the data gathering activity the
students will consolidate/tally the
result of the survey.

2. From the result of the survey, the


students will come up with a
conclusions and recommendations on
what are prevalent counseling needs of
the respondents. They will present it in
the class power point presentation/
visual aids.
