Week 3-4 Router and WAP

This document outlines the learning objectives related to configuring routers and wireless access points (WAPs). It explains the functions of routers and WAPs, their parts, and provides steps for configuring a WAP, including assigning a wireless name and password. The document also emphasizes the importance of understanding when to use a router versus a WAP based on specific networking needs.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:

LO 3: SET ROUTER/WI-FI/WIRELESS
ACCESS POINT/REPEATER
CONFIGURATION
AT THE END OF THE MODULE, YOU
SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

• identify the parts of a Router and

WAP;
• list down the steps in configuring
the Router and WAP; and
• value the importance of router and
WAP configuration.
WHAT IS ROUTER?

Router is used to lengthen the section’s

network by transmitting packets between
logical networks. Specifically,
(1)it connects multiple computers, phones,
tablets, or other devices to form a managed
local area network, and
(2)it provides Internet access to all the
compatible devices that are connected to
the router.

WHAT IS WAP?

Wireless Access Point (WAP) is a wireless network device

that acts as a portal for devices to connect to a local area
network.
Access points are used for extending the wireless
coverage of an existing network and for increasing the
number of users that can connect to it. To determine
whether router or WAP is better, it depends on the needs.
For homes and small business, routers may be the
optimum (if not the best) solution, while medium to large
enterprises and organizations will certainly require a
network of access points and switches.

WIRELESS ACCESS POINT
Preliminary Procedure:
1. Connect the Power Adapter to source and to the
POWER part of your WAP.
2. Connect your computer to WAN of your WAP.
3. Use Dynamic IP Addressing: Go to Computer
Settings>Network an Internet>Select
Ethernet>Change Adapter Options>Right Click
Ethernet>Select Properties>Double Click
TCP/IPv4>Select Obtain an IP address
automatically>Select obtain DNS server address

configuration of WAP upon purchased. If you
want to update the wireless name and
password, simply perform Step 1.

Post procedure:
1.Remove the connection between WAP
and your computer
2.2. Connect the WAN of your WAP to the
LAN of your router or modem.
3. 3. Get and connect a device to your
established wireless network.
EVALUATE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS ABOUT ROUTER AND
WAP. WRITE ROUTER IN THE BLANK PROVIDED, IF THERE IS A
NEED TO USE A ROUTER. OTHERWISE, WAP FOR WIRELESS
ACCESS POINT.

1. Jeorge wants to include free Wi-Fi

on his Milk Tea shop.

2. Vin desires to put up a study hub

business wherein customers bring
their own device and connect to the
Wi-Fi.
3. Pat requests her laptop to be connected
to the Internet through wired network
since she is quiet far from the modem.
4. Ayden needs a device for his tenants on
the 4th floor since modem is placed on the
1st floor.
5. Jane wishes to have an Internet
connection on her desktop computer
through network cable.
REMEMBER
The router acts as a hub that sets up a
local area network and manages all the
devices and communication in it.
An access point, on the other hand, is a
sub-device within the local area network
that provides another location for
devices to connect from and enables
more devices to be on the network.
Wireless routers can function as access
points, but not all access points can work
as routers. While routers manage local
area networks, communicate with outside
network systems, acquire, distribute, and
dispatch data in multiple directions,
establish a point of connectivity, and
ensure security, access points typically
only provide access to the router’s
established network.
