Personal Development starts with knowing yourself.

Before you start to build and improve your

relationships with other people and before you can
identify and set your career and life goals, you
should know yourself well first. This lesson will help
you understand more about yourself and start your
way to personal development.

“SELF” is defined as what an individual sees,

perceives, and defines oneself as apart from each
other. It is the way a person thinks about and views
his or her traits, beliefs, and purpose within the
world.

To know oneself, one must distinguish physical,

psychological and spiritual. Though these are
distinguishable, it is interconnected as one.
Self-concept and Self-esteem
Self-concept is our awareness to ourselves,
what we think and know about our identity,
personality, and individuality.The actual self
and ideal self are two broad categories of
self-concept.

Actual Self is the one that we actually see. It

is the self that has characteristics that we
were nurtured or born to have. It is how we
think, look and act. “GanitoAko! Self”

Self-image is how we see ourselves without

knowing how others view us. It is our
perceive image of who we are.
Self-knowledge is derived from social interactions that provide insight
into how others react to us. It is what we know about ourselves
grounded on the interactions we have to others.

Self-entitlement is when we start to think that we are special and

tends to impose that we are better than others and demand for
special treatment.

Ideal Self is how we want to be. It is an idealized image that we have

developed over time, based on what we have learned and
experienced. It could include what our parents have taught us, what
we admire in others, what our society promotes, and what we think is
in our best interest. “Sana All! Self”
Negotiationexistas the result when the actual
self is far from achieving one’s ideal self.

Social Roles that are adjusted and readjusted as

outcomes of social interactions are the main
reason for negotiations. It is when we find
dissatisfaction from the way we are is not what
we want to be.

Self-esteemfocus on our attitude towards

ourselves. It is how we value or see the worth of
ourselves, given the negative or positive
feedback we receive.

Low self-esteemleads to decreased confidence

levels, inferior, pessimistic, and being a pleaser
of other people.

High self-esteem develops high confidence, a

huge degree of self-acceptance, a tolerance to
what other people think and optimistic.
• Self-concept is mostly informational while self-
esteem is emotionally inclined.

• Comparing people is not pleasantly fair but for

some it actually works to propel them, and
sadly, for others, it discourages them further
down. Personality is too complex to be given
absolute solution or formula.
Personal Effectiveness
making use of all the personal/innate resources – talents, skills, experience, energy and time, to
enable you to achieve life goals.
Talents are inherent ability of a person to do something.
Experience includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of cognitive and practical
activities.
Knowledge both about yourself and certain content/topics.
Skills acquired expertise to do a particular job through training and real-life applications. If the
same ability is used many times in the same situation, then it becomes a habit that runs
automatically, subconsciously.
Here are some skills that will greatly increase the efficiency of any person who have
them:
