market
What Is An Operating System?

An operating system is the most

important software that runs on a
computer. It manages the computer’s
memory and processes, as well as all
of its software and hardware. Without
an operating system, a computer is
useless.
Types of Commonly Used
Operating System
◦Microsoft Windows
◦macOS
◦Linux OS
◦Android OS
◦Chrome OS
Microsoft Windows OS
◦ is a product line of proprietary
graphical operating systems developed and
marketed by Microsoft.
◦ It is grouped into families and sub-families that
cater to particular sectors of the computing
industry -- Windows (unqualified) for a
consumer or corporate workstation, Windows
Server for a server and Windows IoT for
an embedded system.
◦ Defunct families include Windows
9x, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone,
and Windows Embedded Compact.
Mac OS (Macintosh OS)
◦ macOS (originally named "Mac OS X" until 2012
and then "OS X" until 2016)
◦ is the current Mac operating system that officially
succeeded the classic Mac OS in 2001.
◦ In 1984, Apple debuted the operating system that is
now known as the "Classic" Mac OS with its
release of the original Macintosh System Software.
◦ The system, rebranded "Mac OS" in 1997, was pre-
installed on every Macintosh until 2002 and offered
on Macintosh clones for a short time in the 1990s.
◦ It was noted for its ease of use, and also criticized
for its lack of modern technologies compared to its
competitors
Linux OS
◦ is a family of open-source Unix-
like operating systems based on the Linux
kernel, an operating system kernel first
released on September 17, 1991,
by Linus Torvalds.
◦ Linux is typically packaged as a Linux
distribution (distro), which includes the
kernel and supporting system
software and libraries, many of which are
provided by the GNU Project.
Android OS
◦ is a mobile operating system (32-bit and 64-
bit) based on a modified version of the Linux
kernel and other open-source software,
designed primarily for touchscreen mobile
devices such as smartphones and tablets.
◦ Android is developed by a consortium of
developers known as the Open Handset
Alliance, though its most widely used
version is primarily developed by Google. It
was unveiled in November 2007, with the
first commercial Android device, the HTC
Dream, being launched in September 2008.
Chrome OS
◦ sometimes styled as chromeOS and formerly
styled as Chrome OS, is a Linux-
based operating system developed and
designed by Google.
◦ It is derived from the open
source ChromiumOS and uses the Google
Chrome web browser as its principal user
interface.
◦ Google announced the project in July 2009,
initially describing it as an operating system
where applications and user data would reside
in the cloud. ChromeOS was used primarily to
run web applications.
