THEIR FIELD OF STUDY OR CAREER
INTEREST.
EXTERNSHIP

THE PRIMARY INTENT OF AN EXTERNSHIP IS TO


OBSERVE A WORKPLACE TO GET AN OVERVIEW
OF A CAREER. THIS IS SIMILAR TO JOB
SHADOWING. RATHER THAN HAVING WORK
DELEGATED AND PROJECTS ASSIGNED, SUCH AS
ONE WOULD HAVE IN AN INTERNSHIP,
EXTERNSHIPS ARE USED MAINLY TO EXPLORE
INTERESTS AND CURIOSITIES WHEREAS
INTERNSHIPS ACT AS A MEANS TO GAIN SKILLS
AND WORK EXPERIENCE. EXTERNSHIPS ARE
USUALLY UNPAID AND DO NOT LAST AS LONG AS
AN INTERNSHIP.
APPRENTICESHIPS

PROVIDE OCCUPATIONAL
SKILLS AND ARE OFTEN COMBINED
WITH SCHOOL-BASED LEARNING.
APPRENTICESHIPS CAN LEAD TO A
RECOGNIZED QUALIFICATION.
MENTORSHIP

Mentorship is a professional
relationship in which a more
knowledgeable or experienced
person guides and nurtures the
professional development or
growth of another. Its focus
goes beyond learning specific
competencies or tasks and
builds a climate of trust so the
mentee (student) can feel
secure to seek advice on issues

ALLOWS STUDENTS TO
OBSERVE ANOTHER EMPLOYEE
PERFORMING THEIR ROLE. JOB
SHADOWING CAN HELP STUDENTS

A SPECIALIZED FIELD OF STUDY (NURSING, TEACHING,
LEGAL, ETC.) THAT INVOLVES THE SUPERVISED,
PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF PREVIOUSLY LEARNED
THEORY. THESE STRUCTURED ON-THE-JOB EXPERIENCES
ARE CLOSELY CONNECTED TO SPECIFIC COURSEWORK
AND THE STUDENT’S PRIMARY TASK IS OBSERVATION
AND DOCUMENTATION. FOR EXAMPLE, PROSPECTIVE
MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS MIGHT MONITOR A PATIENT,
WHILE FUTURE COUNSELORS COULD OBSERVE A
COUNSELING SESSION AND TAKE NOTES.
INFORMATIONAL
INTERVIEW

AN INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW IS AN
INFORMAL MEETING WITH SOMEONE
WORKING IN AN AREA OF INTEREST TO A
STUDENT. THE INTENT IS FOR THE
STUDENT TO LEARN ABOUT THE REAL-
LIFE EXPERIENCES OF THAT INDIVIDUAL.
IT IS AN EFFECTIVE RESEARCH TOOL AND
IS BEST COMPLETED AFTER SOME
PRELIMINARY ONLINE RESEARCH. NOTE
THAT THIS IS NOT A JOB INTERVIEW AND
THE OBJECTIVE IS NOT TO FIND JOB
OPENINGS.
