CHAPTER 1- KNOWING

ONESELF

Personal
Developme
nt
Content Standard

The learners demonstrate an understanding

of himself/herself during middle and late
adolescence.
Content Performance Standard

The learners shall be able to conduct self-

explanation and simple disclosure.
Learning Competencies:
At the end of the lesson, learners shall be
able to
• Identify one’s strengths and limitations to
relate better with others;
• Inculcate respect of one’s unique
characteristics, habits, and experiences;
and
• Write a reflection on one’s day to day
experiences.
Knowing oneself must be our first
priority!
It is difficult to set goals, go through life challenges to be
successful with your career and relationship without
having clearly understood who you are and what you
want.

Knowing oneself paves the way to self acceptance and better

relationship with others. Having not known oneself may
cause confusion and a big possibility of just wasting much
time and effort. You may tend to put yourself down and
devalue self-importance.
ACTIVITY 1
Resources Needed: pen and work sheet
Procedure:

Write a short descripting of yourself on the worksheet. These

descriptions should consist of only a few sentences outlining who you
are and what you like to do. Do not write your name on it. When
everyone is finished, your teacher will collect all workbooks. Your
teacher will read out some of the works on the class. You need to
listen carefully and try to guess who wrote it. Your teacher will reveal
later who wrote those descriptions.
KNOWING ONESELF
HUMAN PERSON has its own capabilities
or attributes.

Everyone is unique in his or her way.

Some people try to blend in with the
majority, but they are still unique.
You need to accept who you are without
needing to fit into a label of who you should
be. Just know that you will stand out once
embrace everything that makes you
different.
DEFINING SELF-CONCEPT
SELF-CONCEPT – refers to your awareness of yourself. It is a general term
used to refer to how your think about yourself through evaluation and
perception. To be aware of the self, one must have a concept of oneself.

According to Z. HEREFORD (ND), one must do the following tasks to be fully

aware:

• To be aware of your strength, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes;

• To observe and be aware of your moods, reactions, and responses to
what is happening around you
• To become aware of how these moods and emotions affect your state of
mind;
• To examine how interact with others; and
• To observe how your environment affects you.
2 CATEGORIES OF SELF-
CONCEPT
ACTUAL SELF- is built on self-knowledge
which is derived from social interactions
that provide insights into how others react
to you

IDEAL SELF- is how we want to be. It is

idealized image that we have developed
over time, based on what we have learned
and experienced.
