Computer Networking

A computer network is a collection of interconnected computers and devices that allows for resource sharing among users. There are four main types of networks: Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), and Personal Area Network (PAN), each varying in size and scope. LANs are limited to small areas, MANs cover cities, WANs can span continents, and PANs are designed for individual use.

Networking

A computer network is a group of computers and

Peripheral devices, connected through a data
communication system. A computer network
facilitates the sharing of hardware and software
resources among different users working on
different computers.
Types of network
There are four basic types of computer
networks:

1. LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)

2. METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN)
3. WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)
4. PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN)
Local area network
(LAN)
Local area network is used
when two or more computer
or peripheral devices are
connected within a small are,
LAN
like a room office building ,
or a campus. The maximum range of LAN can be 10
kilometers. The number of computer in LAN varies
from 2 to 1000. The hardware as well as software
resource are shared through LAN.
Metropolitan area
network (MAN)
Metropolitan area network is much
larger than a LAN setup and is
spread across the city. Since it can MAN
cover an entire city, it is called MAN. The most
common example of a Man type network in our daily
life is cable Television Network. The main purpose
of MAN is also to share hardware and software
resources. The maximum range of MAN can be
50km.
Wide area network
(WAN)
It stands for Wide Area Network.
This type of network may span
thousands of kilometers and can
encompass the entire world. The
Internet is considered to be a
network of computer in the world and called WA.
Evidently, WAN can span countries and even
continents.
Personal area
network (PAN)
This type of computer network is
mainly created for an individual
person. It consist of a desktop/
laptop computer, a mobile phone,
and/ or a handheld computer device, such as a
PDA or a smartphone. You can use these network
to transfer files including e-mail, calendar
appointments, digital photos, and music.
