Q. How far did he travel?

Runner slips and falls

A. It’s a 400m track. So 200m
Q. What was his displacement
A. Less than 200m. About 160m

RACE STARTS HERE

Lo: Understand the difference between scalar and vector quantities

Scalars and Vectors
Starter:
1. Identify the following Physics quantities - R, I, V, P, E, a, A, v, V, Q, t, F
2. Which quantities have a direction?

Ext – what is the difference between a scalar and a vector quantity?

Learning Objectives:
• – Use vector diagrams to find the sum of vectors at right angles or parallel
• – Identify various quantities as scalars and vectors
• – Define what is meant by a scalar and vector
• – Represent vector quantities with arrows including direction and magnitude
Scalars and Vectors
• A scalar (is any physical quantity that)
has a magnitude (size) only
• A vector (is any physical quantity that)
has a magnitude and a direction.
Your answers must always include a unit

Tasks:
Make a table with at least 5 scalars and
5 vectors
Drawing Vectors
• Vectors can be represented with arrows that show
their size and their direction
• The length of the arrow represents the size.
• To add vectors, draw them end-to-end and then
measure their sum either using a scale drawing or
trigonometry

Task:
1. How would you use scale drawing to work out
the size(or magnitude)?
2. Practice measuring the size of the resultant
vector

EXT: Why is it important to use a graph paper?

Plenary
1 – What is a difference and a similarity between speed and
velocity?
2 – Draw vector diagram with 6N upwards, 3N downwards
and 12N to the right, what is the resultant vector?
3 – Describe what is meant by a scalar and vector quantity
4 – Name 2 scalar and 2 vector quantities
Plenary - answers
2 6N

12N

3N

4 – Scalars have magnitude but vectors have magnitude and direction

5 – Scalars: Mass, distance, speed, time, temperature, energy.
Vectors: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, weight,
momentum, electric field strength, gravitational field strength.
