INTRODUCTION
IN THE REALM OF EDUCATION, ACCESS TO INFORMATION IS CRUCIAL FOR ACADEMIC LEARNING.
THE INTERNET SERVES AS A VITAL RESOURCE FOR EDUCATION, OFFERING A WEALTH OF
MATERIALS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR ONLINE COLLABORATION, AS HIGHLIGHTED BY OHEI & BRINK
(2021).
THE PROVISION OF COMPLIMENTARY PUBLIC WI-FI IN PUBLIC SPACES ENHANCES THE ACCESSIBILITY
OF INFORMATION, WITH THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT ENACTING A PROGRAM TO FURNISH FREE
PUBLIC WI-FI NATIONWIDE, AS STIPULATED BY A 2017 STATUTE. THIS LEGISLATION ENTRUSTS THE
DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (DICT) WITH THE EXECUTION
OF THE FREE PUBLIC INTERNET ACCESS PROGRAM, PROHIBITING ANY FEES FOR PUBLIC INTERNET
ACCESS IN VARIOUS PUBLIC VENUES.
BY JUNE 2019, 2,677 SITES WERE ACTIVE, WITH PLANS, BOLSTERED BY A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE
UNDP IN 2018, TO ADD 6,000 MORE SITES IN REMOTE AND UNDERSERVED AREAS, AIMING TO BRIDGE
THE DIGITAL DIVIDE AND SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVORS.
Accessible Wi-Fi can benefit students by enabling them to access
academic information easily, enhancing productivity, and fostering
collaboration and communication. By providing equal internet access,
students can explore a wide range of educational resources, collaborate
on projects, and engage in discussions beyond the classroom. This
promotes a collaborative learning environment and empowers students
to take control of their educational journey.
For Apayao State College, ensuring equitable access to Wi-Fi is
crucial for its diverse student population. Research on the impact of
accessible Wi-Fi on students'
learning outcomes and experiences can inform policymakers,
educators, and
administrators on promoting digital inclusion and educational equity.
Recognizing the importance of Wi-Fi accessibility can lead to targeted
interventions and initiatives to improve infrastructure and support
students without reliable internet access, creating a more inclusive and
equitable learning environment.

Theme 1. Campus Wi-Fi enhances academic learning
The respondents explained that the influence of Wi-Fi and the
internet on student’s academic performance has been positive,
allowing them to access a vast amount of information in a short
period. Furthermore, students can complete assignments and
submit them on time without the need for printing, using their
smartphones to submit online promptly. Academic oriented internet
usage, as highlighted by Suhail and Bargees (2006), positively
impacts education by improving communication with peers and
educators, providing easy access to libraries and educational
databases, and enhancing study habits and hours.

Theme 2. Using campus Wi-Fi to do other things
The constant availability of Wi-Fi and the temptation to engage in non-
academic activities can have detrimental effects on students’
learning. Students who are distracted by social media, emails, or
online shopping may find it difficult to focus on lectures, engage in
class discussions, or complete assignments. This can lead to a decline
in academic performance, as students may miss important
information, fail to retain concepts, or struggle to meet deadlines.
